Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

hi i had unprotected sex with a girl on the 15 of march and i was drinking quite heavily and smokin some pot as well. the next day my penis and testicles felt like they were on fire i went to a doctor the day after and he gave me some cream for a yeast infection it worked for a while now its the 1st of april and its came back again now my left side by my stomack is bothering me i asked the girl i was with that night about her previous boyfriends and she said she has always had condoms when she was having sex i feel fine but maybey im making myself go crazy is there a possibilty that i have an std or hiv

Nothing you are describing in the way of symptoms is in any way HIV specific. But then you also need to know that neither presence nor the absence of symptoms will ever tell you anything accurately about your HIV status.

The only way to know your HIV status is to get tested. The CDC recommends doing that at 13 weeks after a risky incident.

You had unprotected intercourse. That is a risk for transmission. HIV is not an easy virus to transmit. It's significantly harder to accomplish from female to male. So even IF the woman you were with is HIV+, (note that I said IF!), the odds against transmission during a single such incident are very much in your favor.

However, low risk is not the same as no risk, so you need to learn from this incident. Mixing excessive drinking and impulsive sex is a dangerous combination. You can have as much sex as you like with as many partners as you want to. You just have to make certain that you are wearing a condom everytime. No exceptions, no matter what you may think you know about whomever you are with and/or how great they look. Use a condom everytime.

As for your symptoms, discuss them with our doctor.

Get tested at 13 weeks and collect what I expect will likely be a negative result.

There's no point in getting tested for hiv right away. As Andy said, you need to test three months after your last incident of unprotected intercourse for a conclusive result.
