Fun Ways to pass the Time in the Hospital!
« on: March 07, 2007, 04:33:21 pm »

I like to save the apple juice and use it when they need a urine specimin.

IV tube macrame can also be fun.

Does anyone have any helpful tips about how to pass the time whilein the hospital?

This isn't really a helpful hint, but I did discover one kinda cool thing being in the hospital.  Ask for a long hose for your O2.  The wanted me to move around some, so they'd disconnect my monitors and IV's when a  med wasn't needed.  My O2 hose was 25 feet long, and reached into the bathroom.  It was pretty cool to an odor-free (to my nose, anyway) moment on the john.  I did actually pull the cannulas away, and it did stink, but not when my O2 was on!

LOL, I spent a lot of time in the hospital over the last two years.....here are some of my hints....

Take your laptop and lots of DVD's.  I watched EVERY episode of Friends, LOST, and Golden Girls that I owned on DVD.  Then, I dialed out and surfed porn sites, much to chagrin of my doctors and nurses.

Another thing, as your doctor talks to you, surf webmd and question what he is saying to you .... yeah, that went over well.  LOL.  Of course, ask lots and lots of questions as it gets on their nerves .... what are you giving, isn't it time for, what is for dinner, when is my breakfast coming, etc.  Also, they get really annoyed when friends show up with pizza and beer and you partake .... LOL

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.  Try raiding the Pharmacy and see if you can play a little "Guess Whats in The Bottle" after you take the pills.  That could be exciting.

Another thing...  our next door neighbor, who happens to be a good friend, was visiting me at the hospital.  There were a few other friends and my husband there, too.  My neighbor commented that "it's almost like being at your house, except we don't have wine, cheese, and crackers".  I suggested that next time she came to visit, we remedy that problem.  Well, the next day, here she comes with a big paper shopping bag, the kind with handles on it.  Hidden in the bottom was a bottle of wine, glasses, cheese, and crackers.  We did this a couple of times.  I mentioned it to one of the head nurses when I was about to leave and she said that it really bothered her.  I asked her why, and she said it was because she hadn't been invited!

Also, it's cool to plan your own meals, if you're on an unrestricted diet.  Our main hospital has GREAT fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, and green beans.  I specified that the two times they had it.

LOL Great tips!

Keep 'em coming!

Scooter was on a wireless heart monitor once. A friend came to visit and scootr needed some fresh air so he rolled his IV post down the hallway, got in the elevator, and went outside with his friend. When he returned to his room there was lots of excitement! Aparently scooter had gone outside of the range of the wireless heart monitor and flatlined...  They didn't think it was entertaining.... We did. lol

Request Sherbert...orange, pineapple, lime. When I was in the hospital last year, that's all I could eat. They also had a cool sorbet.

I bet you could make a jello cannon if ya shoved some jello in the O2 hose and cracked the valve...

That would be a fun way to get back at the nurses who wait unt il JUST after you fall asleep to change your IV, give ya meds, etc...

Yeah they also love when you go out and have a cigarette.  I was in for surgery to have a lymphnode removed.  I was not hooked up to anything and was bored, so I dug around in my bag, found my cigarettes and lighter, got in the elevator and walked outside.  As I was coming back the nurse asked where I was, I said outside smoking and flashed her my smokes.....she was NONE to pleased.  LOL.

Last time I was in the hospital, I had a wireless receiver but the battery ran down.  No one came in to check and it was only the day nurse who finally changed the battery indicating it's supposed to be changed daily.  I had been there three days so needless to say, I am not going back to thath hospital again.

You can always send out for Pizza but be sure to order enough for the night shift or else you'll get evil stares from the staff.

The last time that Matty the Damned was in hospital, he was in the isolation ward and was being barrier nursed. Primarily this was because MtD never does anything by half and also because evil is infectious.

Anyway, isolation wards are deathly boring places but fortunately there were lots of medical toys to play with. Anything that came into my room had to stay there. Including those groovy in the ear thermometers that they use nowadays.

When the largely disinterested nursing staff weren't around I discovered that those thermometers don't only fit in one's ear-hole.  :)

If you're going to spend long periods of time in the hospital and you know about it ahead of time I recommend finding out what type of Internet service you can get.  Often hospitals offer wireless broad band these days.  If not, a quick trip to one of the wards with your cell phone to gauge signal strength and quality is a good idea.  If the signal is good and 1X or better you could pick up a cellular broadband card for your lap top.  With a broadband access you can get TV right to your laptop for much cheaper than the $10.00 a day for 8 channels the hospital charges! Figure $50.00 a month for Internet. and a couple bucks a month for TV.  Do a little research, you'd be surprised whats out there.  Slingbox is also an option.  Dialup..well  it just sucks even worse than normal once you get into the hospitals PBX.

If you want to bring a console game, get with the hospital Bio-med department ahead of time.  They may have to do an electrical safety inspection.

One of my favorite games was to play wide eye'd frightened patient... then when the interns and young residents would least expect it I'd slip into very deep medicalese about my case.  They'd usually go scurrying of like frightened mice.

As always...bring presents (food) for the nursing staff!

LOL My husband used to get into remote control fights with his 'neighbors'.  After a while, the hospital started giving him his own room.

We also used to have pizza delivered to the room.  That was fun!

Definitely gifts/food/cards for your favorite nurses.  They like that!!

Well it wasn't a "fun" way to pass time, but at least it helped me pass some time.

In 1973, after I had been discharged from the Army, I had developed a urinary tract infection , due to a stone I was attempting to pass.

I was admitted to the VA hospital in Buffalo, and placed in the cancer ward. It was the only bed space available. I believe it was for about 4 days or so. After a day or two on medications, I started feeling very good.

People were not in good condition on this ward. I was given the job, of going to the pharmacy to pick up medications for that ward. Bet you will never see that happen these days.
