Grant from Gates Foundation to test potential HIV cure
« on: October 22, 2008, 08:08:28 pm »
Seattle scientist Keith Jerome has received $100,000 from the Gates Foundation to test his  idea of engineering a parasitical protein that attacks the DNA of yeast to instead turn it against human cells infected with HIV, the AIDS virus, as an innovative strategy for ridding the body of this deadly infectious virus. Jerome's idea comes from reading about a class of parasitic, invasive proteins (homing endonucleases) that replicate themselves by invading a yeast cell and inserting themselves into very specific locations (hence the "homing" name) on the yeast's DNA. Jerome, whose research interest is in studying how the herpes virus defeats our immune system, thinks it might be possible to alter these proteins to home in on HIV genetics and cut the virus's guts out. The trouble with HIV is it integrates into our cells," Jerome said. The virus basically hides in the genes of our cells, he said, which is why drugs cannot cure the infection and perhaps why a vaccine has been so tough to develop. Using these sleuthing, invasive proteins, Jerome thinks HIV genes can be hunted down and cut out of our cells.

"The way these work, the cell will be able to repair itself, but what's left of the virus will be unable to produce," he said. Jerome said no way could he have gotten funding elsewhere to try something so speculative.

"They said they were looking for really different ideas," said Jerome, a microbiologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center who studies how viruses evade the immune system. "This is certainly off the beaten track. We now have a year to try to show that this crazy idea just might work."

TOO BRILLIANT!!! ...And only one year to see whether it might work! TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE (but let's hope anyway)!
Thank you for the great news, "tash08"!
