Egbert is back!
« on: September 05, 2007, 10:36:46 am »
Well, I didn't think he would visit this year, it being so late in the summer and all.

But, when I awoke, there he was, looking lovingly down at me. None other than my dear Egbert.

For those who don't remember, Egbert is a bat who sometimes pays a visit to my home. Usually, he awakens me in the middle of the night by flitting across my face. But, last night, either I was too dead to the world or he didn't give a flit.

Anyway, I'll leave him where he is for today. He's not hurting anything hanging on the wall near the fireplace.

Tonight, I'll bid him adieu and usher him back to the great wide world.

Ah Egbert. It is always good to see a friendly face.

GASP!   :o

You're a braver man than I am Mark.  I'd be shrieking like a "nelly girlie" man and running from the house.  LOL

At my parents house if I sit outside in the evening and eat a fruit, the fruit bats start circuling around faster and closer till I have to run inside.

edited to add: flitting across your face?! be careful that it doesn't turn into **itting across it... at least those bats drop some pretty heavy loads.

At first I thought this thread was about Ebert of Roger and Ebert and I got all excited....I miss him!  :'(

As for the bat...Mark, there are plenty of other ways to get cheap thrills by having something flit against your face as you sleep - but if that is what turns you on  ;)

Well,

Egbert is off on another adventure. Actually, he became rather testy when I tried to shoo him out the door tonight. He made little bat noises and attacked the feather duster I was chasing him with.

I've never seen a bat grab onto something like that before. He was definitely on for the long haul. He finally flitted into the curtains, which I took down and took outside. He gave me a decidedly dirty look and flew off.

I am always amazed when I see bats at rest, like Egbert on the wall above my fireplace, and then again in flight. They seem so small and fragile when hanging around and then they seem so much larger when they are swooping around the room.

I believe Egbert is of a variety called Yuma Myotis, which feasts on insects.

HUGS,

Mark

Mark, boy I do not think I could deal with a bat... I should have tried the feather duster on boo-boo two nights ago... Me and Will could not get to the house cuz he was out eating the berries by our door and was making a real fit about us being there...

Trade??  Ill pay the shipping costs...  ;D

hey Mark,

Sounds cool. Is Egbert a solitary bat?

There is a large colony of about 10,000 bats living on the edge of the cbd in Sydney, where they roost during the day. Each evening they leave the gardens and fly right by my house to feed on the fig trees just over the back of my place. It's a spectacular site.
These are no ordinary bats though. They are big, amongst the biggest in the world with a wing span of about 1 metre - far too big to be flying around indoors. So big, we call them flying foxes.

Ok, the thought of seeing a gay man chasing a bat with a feather duster has me laughing my ass off.  However, if there were ever a bat in my house, I would have to close the door, walk away, and never return home.  Birds and bats, they make me run faster than Milker runs when there is a bee around!

Hey Eric,
I don't think I'll trade ya. I can handle bats in the house, but every time I have encountered a bear, I have gotten the willies.

Steve, I have heard of flying foxes. They sound really cool. Maybe, one day, I will get to visit the land down under and see for myself.

Sd, you are afraid of things that fly and, let's see, what is it you do for a living again???  ;)

My only worry is that Egbert would have to relieve himself while he was my guest. Luckily, no sign of guano in the living room.

HUGS,

Mark

Mark, about 5 years go I was spelunking with some friends in one of the Glenwood Springs caves.   We made a a wrong tern about 45 minutes into the cave.   I shined my flashlight on one out cropping and woke up a bazillion of your cute little friends.   It felt like about 5 minutes for them to finally clear away from all of us.   Not once did one touch me.   But when It was all said and done, they had shit all over us...   I do not do bat caves anymore...  And I HATE BATS!  Egbert seems nice.....  ;)

Bats are good!  They do a lot for insect control in the city and out in the farmland of Central Texas.  The website Mark posted is for Bat Conservation International, based here in Austin.  The world's largest urban bat colony is about two miles from my home. It's a nursing colony, meaning that the bats that migrate here from Mexico are females, most of them pregnant. About mid-June, they give birth, and by August they're all flying, all 1.5 million of them!  It's quite a sight to see them emerge from under the Congress Avenue Bridge over Lady Bird Lake, almost like smoke sometimes.  Most late summers, it's very dry and they start coming out earlier and earlier, making for the best viewing while still daylight  http://www.batcon.org/home/index.asp?idPage=122

I first encountered BCI at an evening lecture at Texas A&M in 1989.  At the end of the talk, the founder brought out the showstopper, and huge flying fox whose name escapes me, but I got to meet her again in '95 when I did a cover story for Austin Monthly about the bats and BCI.  The guy wouldn't let me hold her, but both times I got to pet her and this may freak some folks, but she was like a big, winged chihuahua and she licked my hand!  I wonder what kind of pet that would make?!

HUGS,

It is not the flying part that bothers me.  It is the fact that birds and bats swoop at you from nowhere and you cannot even see them coming.  The planes I fly in do not swoop.

Hey Jerry,

That's one of the reasons I like my bats. The rate of West Nile had more than quadrupled here this year and the last thing I need is to get sick.

Besides, a friend gave me a bat house for my birthday and I am going to mount it at the back of my guest house near my vegetable garden.

That way, I can collect the guano and add it to the compost pile. In turn, the bats will consume many of the nasty insects which have been plaguing us.

Now, if I could just find something to get rid of the earwigs, I would be a happy camper.

HUGS,

Mark
