« on: July 06, 2008, 08:21:27 pm »
Hey everyone,
I have read EVERY (and I mean every) post about supplements on the forums the past 3 days. It has been my research project for myself. Please do NOT post your beliefs anti or pro about supplements I have read all the debates and feelings both ways. What I want to know is

What Vitamins and supplements do you take?

If you want to comment on why you take them that is fine but please do not debate on this post I have read the debates extensively I am just trying to see what other people take. Thanks a ton!

My supplement regimen has been fairly consistent for several years:

1 multi-vitamin, bid - usually Target's house brand
1500mg niacin, bid - extended-release from Doctor's Trust, to help with hereditary low HDL
5g flax seed, ground
10g glutamine, mixed into sports drink - buy it 2kg at a time from an eBay seller in Brooklyn

I also shoot for 25g fiber and 60g protein by noon every day.

Hey Redhot,
I was wondering if you could tell me how or what you do to try and get 60g of protein every day by noon? I am currently trying to up my protein and any tips would help. If you wanna PM me or reply on here I would be very appreciative thanks a ton!!

Right now I am down to 3 supplements as after 6 months on a big combo of 20 supplements I developed some IBS issues in june for several weeks, which disappeared a few days after I stopped all supplements.

The remaining supplements are :
1) NOW Adam men's multi-vitamin. 2 tablets per day, one morning, one evening.
2) NOW Vitamin D3, 2000 IU each, 2 softgels per day, one morning, one evening
3) NOW Melatonin 3mg, 1 capsule per day before sleep

I may resume some of my other supplements at lower doses than before, one at a time, to try to isolate which one(s) caused my troubles in june.

I take supplements: The "Vi-Pak" provided by ViSalus Sciences. It has a balanced amount of the best supplemental ingredients around. Coupled with proper diet and exercise, these supplements are the key to life, health and prosperity!!

Vi-Pak in Four parts:

1. Patented Anti-Aging & Energy Formula
2. Chelated Multi-Minerals (helps the body absorb about 30-40% of minerals instead of 3-5%), also includes tons of the highest quality Vitamins
3. Double Distilled Omega Oils
4. Super Charged Anti-Oxidants

The components of the ViSalus ViPak work together at a CELLULAR LEVEL to promote healthy mitochondrial function.

I've been on the ViPak for months and honestly I've never felt better in my life. I'm 27yrs old, in decent shape. My hiv meds tend to give me minor spouts of depression. The omega vitals found in the ViSalus ViPak help fight that depression. I gave the ViPak, ORAC value and standard ingredient list to my doctor. He said, "wow, this is really good stuff, keep taking it, keep taking it". LoL

I literally "zing" out of bed in the morning feeling revitalized, rejuvenated and alive! Once, I decided to stop taking the ViPak for about a month just to see what I felt like. Two weeks in, I was experiencing my normal random moments of depression from my hiv meds, I was not energetic, my finger nails and hair wasn't growing as fast or as healthy and overall, I didn't feel healthy. I wasn't sleeping solid like I was when I was on the supplements.

As a young man living with hiv, I have found a way to help my body maintain greater levels of health through the ViPak, coupled with exercise and proper dieting. Anyhow, just sharing what I found. Youtube it if you want or google it. Ask me if you have questions. I do not debate or argue over which supplements other people should take. I simply know that the ViPak is the one for me without a doubt, without question. It might just work for you too!

Some other things you might want to youtube (even if its just for eye candy lol):

Hiya,

I am on:

Selenium
Multivitamine, including Calcium
Omega 3 (fish oin in winter because of it contains Vitamine D)

Before, until some months ago, I also was on:

L-carnitine
Alpha Lipoci Acid
Linoleic Acid

But I quitted, it was very expensive for me and no great differences in lab figures.

I also take a protein supplement, only 3 or 4 times a week, when going to the gym.

No major complaints until now.

Regards,

I take a good combo with lots of antioxidants:

2 mega men sport by GNC
2 200mg Alpha-Lipoic Acid
1 pill green tea extract
1 pill L-Carnitine/Arginine blend

Yummy :) haha.  They are good and I really think they are what kept me from taking meds for 13 years! I just still can't figure out what happened from my last laps in April to my labs at the end of july with such a spike...ahh well...

Mitch, all I can say is that being a long-term survivor doesn't impart ANY wisdom necessarily.  I attend a monthly support group solely for LTS'ers here in Philadelphia, and I'm always aghast at how people that have been infected for 20 years can be so utterly clueless and still be alive.

Sounds like he's trapped in a c. 1989 mind set.

Hi,

Re: What Supplements do you take?

Wow......makes my Centrum Silver just seem so.....seriously Mitch, your digestive system can take that daily?  Just curious...

I took a regimen with more pills/caps for about a year. The main side effects I had was a lot of gas. We are talking serious gas. Just be glad I'm telling you this online and not in person. LOL.

But later on, last june, without changing the regimen, I got serious diarrhea that couldn't be helped except by stopping most of the regimen (down to the 3 I posted earlier in this thread).

Because I have a 1 year supply of all my supps and I don't want to let them all expire (the dates vary widely), I'm still trying to figure out which ones I can continue to take. So far I have had 2 failed attempts when adding back just 2 more supps - diarrhea came back in a few days - and went away after stopping a few days later. I'm only refilling the pill boxes once a week instead of every month, and tracking the side effects if any. This is really puzzling to me because I was careful to try back only the supplements for which diarrhea was not listed as a known possible side effect at all. But my body clearly thought otherwise.

Right now now I'm on my 3rd attempt to go back - last week I was fine on 5 supps, this week I felt ambitious and added back 5 more (on sunday).

I will probably never go back on all 22 supps at the same time. I may end up rotating them based on the expiration dates. And after they all expire I'm not sure what my list will be, except for the multi that I plan to continue for sure.

Just FYI, expired supplements have 6-9 months more good to go shelf life still after the expired dates. Best keep them in the fridge. However, if some obviously shows spots or strange growths, throw them away. This was told to me by a few chaps at GNC and I myself have proven it be true. For powders, it can be tricky. You have to examine them. Technically, if all supplements are kept cool and dry, they extend by 6 months at least.

I used to take in excess of 80+ supplements daily, but have dropped to close to 30. Not due to anything physical but can be a chore to load up my cotton pickin tray every single day/nite. I also take alot of Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal stuff on top of the usual supplements. (Eg; Shilajit, Chawanpranash, ginseng, cordyceps, lots of white/green/red tea...)

So far so good.  I used to live by numbers. These days, with so much uncertainty, I just live and try to stay happy, healthy and distracted; despite suddenly losing my very very precious baby girl/best fren and "pup" of 10years to canine bladder cancer recently. That really broke me and wrecked my health for months and I lost alot weight. I was fighting daily to save her with trips to the vet every 2 days to change tubings for her blocked bladder and jabs for her seizures. It was very financially challenging and I was more than happy to forgo my own needs. Unfortunatly, I still could not save her.  :'(
I'm trying very slowly to mend although I know I will never be the same again without her loving encouraging light in my life. I do my best not to tear up whenever I think of her or look at her pics. So I try really really hard with good sleep, sufficient food groups, supplements to compensate for these past cruel months, and also physical and mental exercises to keep moving forward, inch by inch.

I will not give up (almost did a few times) moving forward alone now, no matter how slow..just gotta, in honour of her.  :-\

I admit I have a bit of a compulsive personality that has now expressed itself in terms of my supplement regimen.  I've always been somewhat fascinated by pills.  Unfortunately when I was HIV -, I was totally fascinated by HIV meds.  Now that I have to take them, I find them totally nasty!  For this reason, if any of my HIV- friends ask about them, I just offer them a Sustiva to get a hint of what's in store if they lose sexual vigilance.

Hey Mitch,

No Artichoke Leaf extract?   ;)  I do about ten of those you listed. And I cycle different supplements, about every threee months. But I always stick with the multi vitamin daily.

Thanks. My 1-year supply of 22 supplements would fill my entire fridge, I am afraid.
The only supps I keep in the fridge are the probiotics. They are supposed to be "stable" probiotics even unrefrigerated, but I still read that it helps.

I don't take any powders. I tried some (protein ones), but they were just too nasty for me no matter what I mixed them with.

Sorry about your puppy. If you live alone now, have you thought of getting another pet ? I have two cats, adopted from the humane society 7 years ago, and I know they can really bring some happiness when I'm down.

My doctor recommended bovine collostrum for immune support, fish oil (a natural anti-inflammatory), NAC and  astragalus.  This is all in addition to a good protein and multivitamin.

Thanks Madbrain. Appreciate your good thoughts. I dun believe I will take on another pet for a very long time. She is THE one and only one baby I love too much to ever consider another. Me and my life  partner are managing. Currently I'm dealing with depression from the loss and slowly getting a grip of it with getting out more and doing stuff. I breakdown when I watch videos of her playing sometimes. It's really painful. I try to avoid those moments. :-[

I am reducing my supplement list slowly and taking more fresh fruits and vegetables, not as replacements, but just wanna get more "live" stuff into my system. So far my energy levels have stabilised but I discovered if I try to sleep b4 midnite and for 6-8 hrs, my energy levels pick up considerably. Also I increased my intake of green tea consumption daily. I usually start my empty stomach in the morning with juices. It does seem to help me at least.

Stay well and Blessed Be! Peace.. :-*
