Tuberculosis: I has it!
« on: September 11, 2008, 02:18:51 pm »
The inactive sort, what!

It seems that Frau Eva is on one of her public health jags and so last week she made Matty the Damned do one of those infernal Mantoux test whatsimijiggies.

It was gloriously reactive. I mean as hot as one of Sarah Palin's daughters under a hockey stud.

Naturally further tests were ordered (mainly to do with teh chest) and it's been decided that I have arrested pulmonary TB.

Which is nice. :)

There is some course of treatment that I must take, and of course I will follow it. Apparently the instructions are spelled out in a series of bumps on my ass.

INH (isoniazid + pyrodoxine) for nine months. Friend of mine is finishing up a regimen.
You'll be relieved to know it has no adverse effects on the user's personality whatsoever.

Well, there's the bright side. It means that 1/2 of Australia has read the instructions .... ;D

You're presuming that half of Australia can read, Cracker. :D (That's called humour Peter, you might wanna get Andy to explain it ya) ;)

But seriously people Peter and Andy are great guys. You should catch their live show. They are totally the Penn and Teller of AIDS. :D Back to the matter at hand, it seems that most of the fuss about how I contracted it in the first place. Years ago I worked in the Far Western Sector of NSW and it's thought that's where I was exposed . . .

. . . which is the polite way of saying I caught it from Aborigines, something I do not accept. It's more likely that I contracted it from livestock or whitefellas. There are some seriously attractive camels in the GFA.

But whatever, it's arrested. So I've got the whole romantic benefit of being tuberculous but without the ghastly consequences.

Suck on that Kafka!

I had to take INH everyday for a year and since I had just gotten my HIV diagnosis, I was not in the mood for it and I stopped the first time.  The second time, the Department of Health said if I did not complete the regimen, they could have an officer of the law at my house every day until it was finished.  I did finish and there were no side effects.  ;D  Have the best day

TB POZ

Will likely get you terrific parking places.

Sorry about the diagnosis, but if you HAVE to have TB (and you do), you picked the best kind to have.

Odd/sad that they would indirectly put the blame on the aborigines, huh? The more things change, the more they stay the same.

MTD,

I am sorry to hear this news, one more thing to deal with.

Sounds like you have a few choices and you have a plan.

What's remarkable, is that you can still have your good sense of humour.

Best of luck and take care, Alain.

Not really. Indigenous Australians unfortunately suffer from TB at a rate 14 times that for non-indigenous Australians. It's not an unreasonable assumption for them to make. That being said, Matty would have a better idea of his movements and likely contacts so his rejection of that assumption is probably spot on.

Matty-the-Damned, I am sorry to hear about your ailment.  As you may recall from previous postings of mine, I recently suffered from TB, and am now nearing the end of treatment (just around six weeks to go).  Excuse me if it is presumptuous of me, but is there anything about my anecdotal experience which might be helpful to you?

My TB was active, though my lungs were quite clear.  Seems it was more of a lymph-node or systemic infection than chest infection in my case.  They put me on the standard treatment of 2 months of Isonazid/Rifampin, plus pyrazinamide and ethambutol, followed by 4 more months of just Isonazid/Rifampin.. all taken once a day at bedtime.  I think your regimen will be less because yours is inactive.

I never had any upset stomach from those antibiotics, though they certainly do discolour the urine and feces (orange).  In my case I doubt I would have noticed any minor side effects however, as within days of beginning to take them I felt so much better (after having felt so bad for 2-3 months).

I'm now nearing the end of treatment, but I have only once forgotten one night's dose.  I called my doc the next day somewhat concerned but he assured me that missing one day is not a problem - and that in fact every-other-day doses are used in some unusual circumstances.  However missing two days in a row could be a problem, he said.

I'm sure you know better than I that it is necessary to co-ordinate with your hiv doc (assuming you have a separate TB doc as I do), about issues such as Rifampin's interference with some HIV meds.  I believe my TB doc told me it somewhat reduced the effectiveness of Sustiva, but my hiv doc said it was not enough to be a big issue (and obviously treating the TB was an immediate priority).

Anyway I hope the above can be of some use.. sorry for the lengthiness.  And best of luck with your treatment.  In closing might I ask if you could remind me of your (approximate) location?

Please, just call me Berners.. or Baron.

I think your regimen will be less because yours is inactive.

In the state of PA, US, our health department puts a person with inactive TB on a nine-month regimen of INH.

I wish you nothing but good things to you now, and in the future. You added  so much pazzazz to this place. You will be miised allot.

Thank you for making me laugh.

You were real man, maybe too real for some of us. But you always called em as you saw em, and I respect you for that.

Thanks again for all of the countless nights you made my evenings just a little bit better with you sharp wit and unique sense of humor. I, for one, dug it. You pulled me out of the basement on SEVERAL occasions. I can't thank you enough for that. I wouldn't even know how to begin to thank you so i won't even try.

I will miss you so very much.

I don't know "The Why" but I sure am sad that you have been banned.

I wish you nothing but good things to you now, and in the future. You added  so much pazzazz to this place. You will be miised allot.

Thank you for making me laugh.

And Laugh. And laugh some more. Through my minds eye, this place will not be the same with you being "Baned Forever"... I am sad as.....

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST!

Much Love and Thanks,
DaddyJ.

"Nazis" and "pussies," eh? Everyone has had something to say about Matty's ban and our banning policy. You're the only one who decided to level a personal attack. Consider yourself warned -- and don't even think of responding to this post.
