I pretty much always take my meds with water now, but in the past I have used milk, coffee, soda, and even soup broth.

I was wondering what other people take and if there is any medically preferred liquid.

"You’ve no doubt heard that grapefruit juice can greatly increase the effects of some drugs. Even to a dangerous degree. Pharmacologist David Bailey made that discovery almost 20 years ago. A substance in the juice blocks an enzyme that breaks down the drugs. Now Bailey’s back with a fresh finding—grapefruit juice, orange juice, apple juice and other fruit juices can also severely decrease the absorption of certain drugs. He announced this discovery August 19th at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia.

Some of the drugs that have their dosages effectively decreased by various juices include medications that fight heart disease, infection and even the rejection of transplants. Key ingredients in the juices appear to block a molecule that carries drugs from the small intestine into the bloodstream. So a lot of the medication gets flushed out without ever reaching its target. Bailey says, "This is just the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure we'll find more and more drugs that are affected this way." So when taking medications, a sip of H2O is probably the way to go."

I have been sticking to good ole H20 (on Atripla).
Would be wonderful to chase it down with a nice strong gin and tonic tho. lol

Just feel comfortable not complicating things, and it seems to not cause any problems at the moment.

I'm on Atripla and Lipitor and I've been told by my doctor to stay away from grapefruit juice! I use to eat and drink grapefruit juice all the time before going on Lipitor, but now that it's one of the medication I'm required to take I haven't had a grapefruit in over two years now.

As far as my Atripla I take it with H20 or H20 with flavor crystal lite added to it. (I usually prefer Lemonade or Fruit punch flavor)

I mean I don't know if this is healthy or not, but it's the only thing I can drink that's close to a soda or flavor drink. I've read on some internet websites that some medication should not be taken with sweet drink or coffee, so I try to stay away from that stuff, but so far so good I haven't had a problem with drinking it with this. I mean it's just powder added to water and it's kind of good for you.

I use water and can swallow over 20 pills at one time.

Water here too. The few times that I have used soda, I get a huge mouthful of pill tasting foam if I don't swallow quick enough.

I've been drinking a 2 liter (at least!) of Coke daily for like 25 yrs or something
it's how I start the day, and it washes down my dinner and my meds

Mim used to have her liquid meds mixed in a about 10cc's of white milk. Now, with pills, she swallows her am pills with either chocolate milk or juice (whatever she's having with breakfast). Then, her night pills go down with water simply because she's already brushed her teeth. (and she can only have juice with meals)

And, I have witnessed Philly downing a hefty amount of pills with nothing more than a shot of espresso.

Beer.

Well, I have in the past.

I also used mixed drinks for this when handy. When on Crixivan, it is more important to be on time than what you swallow with it.

Now, I use water, coffee, tea, soda, rice milk, whatever is handy.

So.....hmmmmm. does that mean I can wash my Atripla down with a good ole gin and tonic??
JK. Have been so careful cause just started meds and trying to avoid as many side effects as possible.

Whatever is handy. I've never had backwash from the medicine.
If i'm feeling quesy for some reason, milk. Or root beer, or tonic water.

I drink a lot of water, hopefully compensating for steady draining of the wine cellar since my breakup.

Most mornings it's coffee with cream & the pink stuff.

Evenings Diet soda (prefer Coke but it depends on what's on sale)

Iced tea or occasionally water.

And I can only find Philly's skill amazing since I have to do them one at a time or they get stuck.

My grandmother took pills with no liquid. She was really hardcore.

Back before HIV, I used to take pills (mostly just aspirin) without liquid. When I started with AZT, I discovered that liquids made them go down so much easier!

Once I had a pill get stuck partway down and break open. For the next five minutes or so, everytime I coughed or exhaled this cloud came out of my mouth (and it sure tasted awful) I guess the pill went down the wrong pipe or something.

Anyway, now I make sure I always drink something first to lubricate my throat, then swallow the pill. Since I was a machinist mate in the Navy, I refer to this as priming the pump. Weird I know, but hey, it works for me.

Oh yeah, I've had that happen -- I think the worst was with neurontin, which isn't an HIV med but a med for neuropathy.

I drink a lot of water. Usually it's water, if not iced tea, juice, or milk just because I hate putting pills in my mouth without something flavorful to wash them down.

Im bad...but I drink anything...bottled water, v-8 juices, ....vodka martini....

The only thing I dont drink is ...as much as I love it...grapefruit juice.

Pepsi due to having to drink it to activate the fungal medication. So I take all my meds with Pepsi.

I find that taking my pills with a glass a milk (and a snack) eases the side effects of Kaletra.
I can't choke down one pill at a time, but the whole handfull at once is no problem. *gay*

I may hold the record for the amount of pills I can swallow with only one swig of water. (I wonder if there is a toaster oven prize for that?) I am currently taking 17+ a day and do about half in the a.m. and the other half in the p.m. I was informed of the possible negative effects of grapefruit juice WAY after the time I had changed to that instead of rum. Der.
