Worried sick i now may be HIV positive
« on: May 06, 2012, 07:48:21 am »
Hi ,

On the 23rd of march i made a huge mistake & let a prostitute perform unprotected oral sex on me - now I'm terrified I'm HIV positive.

My reason for thinking this is :- that as i have read on many website about the early symptoms & the time scales they take to show - well i have had 3 of them.
14 days after the possible exposure i had a sore throat for about a week & fever & joint pain for around 2 days at the beginning of the symptoms - have been OK since though.

I hope this is just a coincidence - but i can't help fearing the worst - am i right to be so afraid  about this ? I will be tested this week hopefully.

Thanks for your input , Scott

Scot,

Getting a blowjob is absolutely NOT a risk for hiv infection. Not only is saliva not infectious, but it also contains over a dozen different proteins and enzymes that damage hiv and render it unable to infect.

Before you ask about blood in her mouth, unless you're in the habit of repeatedly punching a person in the mouth before they blow you, there could not possibly be enough blood present to cause concern.

There have been three long-term studies of couples where one is positive and one is negative. In the couples who used condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, but no barrier for oral activities, not one of the negative partners became infected with hiv. Not one.

Whatever is causing your symptoms, it cannot be hiv. If you feel unwell, see a doctor. It's nothing to do with hiv. No way, no how.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST SPECIFICALLY OVER A BLOWJOB, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Hi Ann,

Thank you for taking the time to reply to this - I'm now feel suitably reassured however as you stated I will still go and get tested just to be on the safe side for this & everything else.  I won't go there ever again!!

Scott.

Scot,

It doesn't matter who you have sex with, the important thing is that you use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse. This goes for people you date too, not just sex workers.

By all means go have a complete sexual health check up. You should be doing this at least once a year anyway, so mark the date down on your calendar and get another check up next year.

Provided you've not been having unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse with anyone that you neglected to mention, there is no reason to think you will get anything other than a negative hiv test result.

Hi Ann ,

Just got my 7 week post exposure test results back today & I am negative for all STD's which I think is good sign. (I'm sure your not surprised to hear this esp with the HIV test)

They want me  back to the clinic towards the end of June for the 3 month test for HIV & Syphilis again & hopefully all results stay the same. This will put my mind at rest for once and for all assuming results stay the same - even though I know you said I didn't have a risk - it just great to have it confirmed by testing !!

I would just like thank you again for your information - it really helped, as you could probably tell I was bit anxious when I posted.

Will post back with the 3 months test results.

Best Regards ,Scott

Since you never had a risk for HIV from anything you are reporting, that negative result is no surprise here. Certainly expect that you'll get the same again at 3 months.

Scot,

You're welcome.

Make having a complete sexual health check up a yearly routine (or twice yearly if you become very active or have several partners). Think of it like your yearly check up at the dentist - you may not have a toothache, but you go anyway. It's always good to have that confirmation of your negative hiv status.
