Hi,

it's been a good 6 months now since I started getting this salty taste in my mouth. It comes and goes. When I drink water like now, it tastes very salty. I've been Googling around and can't find anything that really matches, and I wonder if this could be related to syphilis? HIV? I totally forgot to mention this to the ID doctor because I didn't take note to ask, and I didn't feel it during my visit.

Anyone has experienced that before? I haven't found anything in here. Right now it's "annoying", some days it's "serious", like i feel I just poured salt in my mouth. :-X

Some anti biotics can distort the taste. Sometimes a metallic taste is common follwowed by a period of not being able to taste correctly. Cum is commonly salty. Perhaps someone left a bad taste in your mouth. LOL. Rob

Thrush is a rockin' little oral yeast infection people with HIV commonly get.

I've had it... but it was caused by antibiotics.  No fun!

Yeah I had a discussion with bear about this, and it doesn't look/feel like thrush at all. And as I said it comes and goes, right now I don't feel it at all, and 2 days ago when I was drinking water it was like drinking from the ocean.. weird.. and that happened about 6 months ago, I haven't changed anything in my diet, no meds at all, and at that time I was not hiv+.. I guess i can THANK GOD for an unknown disease!

But seriously I'll ask my ID doctor next time I see him. If he has a magic answer i'll let you know !

I've heard that certain mineral deficiencies can cause odd tastes... notably vitamin B-12 and zinc deficiency.

It can also be a side effect of drugs... if you're taking something like lithium or even penicillin.

I checked on Google... there seem to be a variety of things that can cause it.  Hmmm.  I'd talk to your doc.

Yeah the scary info is about the brain damage.. that's why I asked initially if that could be syphilis related  ???

Methinks if you had neurosyphilis or late stage syphilis, you'd know.

I just checked... and the symptoms seem to be exceedingly severe...

Yep, you should ask me (good memory!).  In my case, I believe it was thrush.  I had it while in the hospital with PCP and for a very short while afterwards.  I thought the hospital just had nasty tasting water, which is silly because it's from the same water mains that we have.  I asked for bottled water, and it tasted the same.  After I got something better for the thrush (that swish and swallow stuff is for the birds) and got the thrush taken care of, the taste went away.  I didn't have the taste 'til I went into the hospital and was given many antibiotics for the PCP.  It sure was annoying, though.  Good luck with it.
