Worried, in need of answers
« on: January 22, 2009, 01:02:01 pm »
Okay... So, three months ago... I was about to have unprotected sex with a woman who, according to her own words, has slept with over ten guys. However, I took off before the actual intercourse. But we did rub against each other. She was on top, and my penis touched the outside of her vagina. I did NOT have an erection at that point. So it was just my unerected penis rubbing against her vagina... Is there any chance of infection? My current girlfriend thinks that there's no chance, but I want to hear an expert's opinion on this. The reason why I'm so scared is that if I got HIV, I've propably infected my girlfriend by now.

At no time were you at risk of contracting HIV. Take the time to read the lesson on transmission. You can find the link in the "Welcome" thread.

So there's no risk, even when our genitalia were in contact? I did read the transmission page, but I guess I missed that. And yeah, it wasn't actual vaginal intercourse, so I guess you're right... My bad. But hey, thanks a lot! Maybe now I'll be able to get some sleep.

Rubbing, touching, mutual masturbation and other variations on those activities are absolutely NOT any risk for HIV transmission.

Protecting yourself sexually against HIV is actually very simple. Use a latex everytime without exception for both vaginal and anal intercourse and you're well protected. It really is that simple.

You have no cause for further concern this time.

Cheers.

One more thing. I know this is not HIV-related, and I'm sorry to bother you with this, but was there a chance of catching any of those STDs? I have no symptoms, but I thought it might be possible, since the head of my penis was in contact with her vagina and propably exposed to secretions... Maybe I'm just scared and just need to get this off my mind. Any answers would be appreciated, though.

We focus specifically here on HIV. Other STDs are easier to get than HIV. Because that is so we always recommend that anyone who is sexually active ought to regularly have a full STD panel done.

That means at least annually and more frequently if there are any symptoms.

If you aren't having any symptoms right now then I don't see any need for testing right away.

Mig,

The reason why I'm so scared is that if I got HIV, I've propably infected my girlfriend by now.

I take this to mean you've been having unprotected intercourse with your girlfriend. You shouldn't be, because you can't tell a person's hiv status by looking at them or listening to what they tell you. You need to test together before the condoms come off.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST OVER THIS RUBBING INCIDENT, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and CONSISTENTLY, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple.

Thanks Ann for the advice. We DO use a condom every time we have sex. But the reason I was worried for her is that we've had a situation where the condom has broken. In fact, this has happened twice. Was it bad luck or incorrect use of condoms, this I do not know. But if it is certain that there was no risk whatsoever in that rubbing case, I shall not worry about this anymore. But we'll still keep using those condoms. Thanks.
