Healthy Diet
« on: February 06, 2008, 09:21:56 am »
I am only on Incapacity benefit and  have a limited amount of funds to last me the fortnight. I find it very expenseive to eat a healthy well balanced diet. To eat fresh fruit and vegetables as my doctor has advised cost me a fortune especially as I just cook for myself. I do take multivitamin supplements, but I really want to eat healthy.

Dont get me wrong, I love to cook and when I have someone to cook for I go all out. But if I am on my own I usually just throw something into the oven and not really bother. Any advice on how to goet out of this? Or if not does anyone want a houseboy lol  :D

Are you Indonesian? My last houseboy was Indonesian and he was terribly good. Until he got like totally scalded by a pot of tea.

Fucker. It was a waste of good tea, and to a lesser extent, reasonably good help.

But that's beside the point.

Fresh food is really a must, but expense sometimes restrictive in these matters. So, do you have access to a community pantry? If not a decent vitamin and mineral supplement is essential. It would be advisable I think to ask your HIV physician for a referral to a nutritionist. A nutritionist can assist you in putting together a suitable diet on a low income.

Best regards,

MtD

No I'm not Indonesian (cant spell today) just have always been told I would make either a good houseboy or wife. I'm the best looking of guys so I take houseboy lol.

Am taking multivitamins but its just not the same as eating the real food. Plus my dietician isnt very helpful as long as my weight is alright (had a bad incident with food poisoning) she's not bothered.

Oryan, I also find it financially, well, almost financially crushing to try to eat healthy.  And I've ended up tossing out a few bagged salads because they go "rusty."  I agree about seeing a nutritionist.  I go to food pantries to supplement my food supply, but I'm not sure where you're at if you have access to any.  That would be an idea though.  Good luck.

Hi hon
Contrary to popular belief, healthy eating CAN be done on a budget (in the UK anyway); it basically comes down to doing some research, applying a bit of self discipline and making sensible choices. Oh and avoiding impulse shopping. ;)

If you’re serious about healthy eating, I’m more than happy to help you; email/text me.

For now, I did a quick Google search under ‘healthy eating on a budget uk’ and came up with a few links for you to check out, if you like:

http://www.eatwell.gov.uk/healthydiet/

http://www.healthfirst.org.uk/publications/healthy_eating_tips.htm

http://info.cancerresearchuk.org/healthyliving/dietandhealthyeating/onabudget/ (I know it’s aimed at people living with cancer but the principles for healthy eating are all there)

Plus advice for students (who are always on a budget!) can be helpful too, for example:

http://northumbria.ac.uk/sd/central/stud_serv/swskhks/lf/eathealth/

I also found this link:

http://www.nutriprofile.org/Default.aspx

If you complete the questionnaire they send you a nutrition profile to help guide you. My eating habits are pretty healthy but I actually completed the questionnaire myself (for the hell of it!); should get my results/profile back in the next 24 hours. Will let you know…

buying and cooking locally grown vegetables and only those that are in season , would that cost a fortune ??

i have a plastic box with a base to collect water, and i wash and cut up a varieties of vegs (mise en place) and put them in , and just stir fry in the wok with garlic and ginger the amount i need each servicing. when you have a 'rainbow' on your plate, it will certainly helps you to stay healthy.
