Bands/Artists/Composers from the past
« on: August 30, 2011, 09:29:46 am »
I am 'stealing' this from one of my FB friends... he said it was ok.

Question of the day..... If you could go back in time and see any band/artist (any venue) in concert who is now dead, who would you choose?  I would probably choose Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Jim Morrison, of course. I even went to his grave in Paris wearing leather pants 20 years ago.

A tiny bit earlier in time, but:

Was it Guillaume DuFay riding in on the top of an elephant singing about the fall of the Byzantine Empire? or a stand in?

I wanted to put young Bowie cause I shoot myself for not having gone in the 70's. Also, he's not dead.

I'd probably choose the Queen of Disco - Sylvester (James).  Not only is his music generally fun and upbeat and his costumes a hoot, he was open about being gay and of his HIV status.

Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, Billie Holiday, Coltrane, Miles.

Oh, and I'd totally live to see Angie Xtravaganza.  That bitch Philicia actually has pictures and real memories of my gal.

Janis J, Hendrix, Teddy Pendergrass (he is dead, isn't he; apologies if he's not), Howlin' Wolf.  Also, the original Led Zeppelin.

Yes he is, Betty.  He died last year in January or February.  He is one of the five great R&B gods who are no longer with us (the others being Marvin, Luther Vandross, Barry White, and Gerald Levert).

Hmmmm. I did get to see quite a few but missed some.

Some of these I did get to see. Would so love to redux them all. Artie Shaw. Lee Wiley. Ethel Waters. Billie Holiday.  Ella. Caught Dietrich a few times but hadn't yet met her. Years later we did a book together. Fred Astaire. Judy. The Doors. (They were a bar band at a place on E 59th St. - The Bridge). 40s and 60s Sinatra. Joplin. Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne in NORMA. Eileen Farrell. Mabel Mercer. Jackie Wilson. Carmen McRae. Heroes all.

I know there are more but will take those for starters. Please!
