tinea cruris (jock itch)
« on: August 10, 2008, 05:01:44 pm »
I seem to have either a case of jock itch that won't go away, or a rash resulting from the treatment creams I've tried.  I tried a generic one from Walmart, active ingredient clotrimazole, and Lotrimin (I think the active ingredient is terbafine or something like that).

Just wondering if any of you have had this opportunistic infection.  I know it is quite common among the general population, but they say that immunosuppressed individuals do have more trouble with it.

Or, just a thought - could this be Seborrheic dermatitis?

I used to get this all the time when I would go to the pool.  I just used some creams that you can buy from off the shelfs, they have worked pretty good.  Very uncomfortable though...  also, you can sort of look like a sex predator when you are always scratching yourself in public.

I don't get jock itch all that often, but when I do I use Lotrimin spray.  It sure can take a long time to clear up.

I also always use medicated powder 'down there' when I get out of the shower.  I dry off very well and sometimes use a blow dryer (blow job?).  The times I have gotten jock itch I either ran out of powder or was out of town and forgot to take it with me.  Loose-fitting undies and / or pants help a lot, too - anything to give a bit more ventilation.  If OTC remedies don't help, perhaps you can ask your Dr.

Thanks guys for your tips.  It probably doesn't help that I live in Thailand and it is rainy season.  But I definitely feel this comes on a lot stronger and more often now that I'm positive.

Wellhungarian, I manage not to scratch in public, but the red blotches around my upper thighs tend to make the girls here quite put off.   Happily the last couple of days they're fading, after a week or so - I think they were a reaction to the clotrimazole and Lotrimin rather than the actual infection.

David, I wonder what was the brand name of the powder you use?

Diminished immune system + fungal crap + warm, damp humidity = crotch rot

Can't you get something from your doctor if it's super-bad instead of Walmart?  Dermatophyte infections are common in HIV infected patients.

Dixieman is right on; Gold Bond is what you want.  In fact, it's what my Dr. recommended (along with Lotrimin spray).  Keep using the powder daily even after it clears up and I doubt you'll have to deal with it again.  If it doesn't start getting better (not completely clear up, but start to improve), I'd check about something stronger via prescription.

My preferred treatment for jock itch and athlete's foot is tea tree oil, mixing a few drops in a dollop of regular body lotion and rubbing it in.  I was lucky enough to find Nature's Gate Tea Tree Oil Moisturizing Cream in a big pump bottle somewhere a few months ago--the oil is already mixed in--and it works splendidly.  Three days of treatment, and no more fungus.  The other key my urologist told me for keeping jock itch down is wearing only 100% cotton underwear and washing them in sufficiently warm water with a cleaning agent to make certain any fungus in them is killed.  Die fungus!  Die!

Thanks all, I will soon try some of these remedies.

I also may try some Thai brands I recently learned about on another forum:

Phoebus Ointment
Zeasorb AF
Kee-Phung (salicylic acid and sulfur)
Synalar-N Ointment
