Title: Open wound in gym shower
Post by: BK30274 on January 20, 2017, 04:17:32 pm
Hey guys,

so I feel like an idiot for even asking, but as someone with anxiety I feel just an answer will help.

The question is about surface to wound contact.

The other day I went to the gym and forgot my shower shoes.  Sometimes I bringing them sometimes I don't its never been a big deal.  A lot of people were walking around barefoot.  My question is...I had a small wound I had scratched the night before between my toes.  It wasn't bleeding and I'm not sure if it was still open.  Anyway the question is, if someone who is HIV+ bleed/sweat/ejaculated on the floor and I stepped in it barefoot with that wound (even if the would was still open..it wasn't deep to begin with)...would this be a mode of HIV transmission? Surface to wound contact of blood?

I just ask as I've read some contradicting stuff on the web about open wounds and HIV being alive outside the body.  Just an quick answer and why or why not would be helpful.

Thanks guys.

No, your scenario is not a mode of transmission for the HIV, even if you had a gaping leg wound, rather than a small wound that may not have been open.

HIV is fragile and does not survive contact with air, let alone contact with the environment of a shower.

You had no risk whatsoever of HIV infection in the incident you describe.  Move on with your life and review how HIV is transmitted:

Hi everyone,

So I have the dumbest question ever and after this I defiantly think I will see someone about my anxiety.  The scenario is that the other day I was walking out of a bar and was stopped by a street peddler, really kind of bummy dude like you see in cities.  Anyway he shook my hand and his hands were very dry and cracked.  Afterwards when I turned a corner I looked at my hand and saw nothing on it.  I waked about 15 minutes to my car, drove about 10 minutes home, and washed my hands with dish soap and warm water.  About 10 minutes later I was sitting in bed and had a back rectum itch right inside, when I scratched it I think I broke the skin.  For whatever reason this situation freaked me out, maybe because if all the other stress going on right now.  Basically I was wondering if, had this guys blood gotten on my hand was washing my hands and the time pasted enough to kill the virus? I'm I correct in assuming that I had no risk in this scenario?  Like I said stupid I know but asking is just the reassurance.

Hi

You have had no risk whatsoever as was explained to you by Patrick, asking the same question in a different way will not get you a different answer.
So please do not post about any similar irrational risk again.

Best,

Wade
