That is the title of the article, which I found interesting, so I thought I'd share it.

I'm not sure its the most important, but I sure loved watching it.. I also can't say that it was the deciding factor for gay guys to start barebacking again like they allude to in the article.  it was a good article though to learn about the timeline and such.  I didn't see this movie actually until about a year ago.

The Haitian uncut cocks are larger by far in a machofucker video.

I will also state, for the record, that the article is incorrect in stating that condom use magically appeared as soon as the AIDS epidemic appeared. Actually it took a lot of years for that to happen.

The best example of this would be any Jeff Stryker video, as he was the hugest "star" at the time. His first video was around 1986 and IIRC went condom-less well up to 1989. I only give this example to show that all of the major studios did this until a much later date than you'd expect, unless you were watching a lot of porn in that time period.

  • HIV+ since 1993. Relentlessly gay.
Interesting article. Who knows what influence, if any, bareback porn has had on people's sexual behavior. The author seems enamored by "Dawson" even though many people would be put off by a person who finds out he has HIV and then has unprotected sex with 20 guys at once on camera. The author's comment "Depending on your point of view, it is either a transgressive act of eroticism or an incredibly irresponsible act that demonstrates how to become infected with HIV. Or perhaps both" reflects the conflict and ambivalence many gay men currently have regarding safer sex. It seems that for good or ill sex without condoms is being normalized again.

The film is interesting. The "studio" is interesting.   The article has weak arguments and logic at times, some described in this thread.  I hardly think the flick the most important gay porn film ever made....   The author is yes clearly drawn to Dawson.  Me not so much.
Little effort has gone into reaching consensus about what might constitute a great Gay Porn Film.
Please provide the criteria before the nominations are made.

I seriously doubt whether sex with condoms has ever been "normalized" in our history. It has certainly been imposed on us, but I have doubts as to whether it was a sought-after thing.

I remember in the mid 90's to early 2000's, when I got most of my video porn at adult bookstores, it was difficult to find movies that were bareback.  Well, except for the Falcon classics they carried.  Then, in the early 2000's, it seemed that the bareback porn was coming from Europe--at least the films I could find at book stores, and even when high-speed internet came about.  Then, I noticed the U.S. bareback films in the early to mid-2000's were from smaller studios, and usually with very amateur and not very attractive guys.  That was my experience and how I remember it.

But, now it seems bareback is just as common as condom films.  And, I admit that I tend to watch more bareback.  I didn't realize it at first, thinking I watched whatever film caught my attention.  But, I noticed that I would skip over films for titles that said bareback.

There's a big difference between using condoms when you have sex and watching a porn movie featuring sex with condoms. Visually yes, condoms are a turnoff, I think. Especially when they use those pink ones.

But when it comes to actual sex I wouldn't risk not using them unless its with an UND poz guy. Fiction ain't reality, as if I even had to say that.

I honestly feel that most porn actors, especially gay ones, are aware that theres a very high chance they will get infected and are fine with it. Its the job they chose and it comes with the territory.

That hottie Mason Wyler is poz now and I think hes still doing movies.

That was interesting. But yes, condoms are a turn-off in many ways. I think bareback porn will become the norm, because people are just tired of it all.

This timing you mentioned is due to the use of RNA PCR tests -- I can't recall what year this became commercially available but I am thinking ~2007. Many studios have this testing disclaimer now during the opening credits. IIRC the "window period" is down to 9-10 days with it.

Previous to that bareback was more limited to studios like Treasure Island, and they were simply sero-sorting actors then with verbal claims.

A "very high chance"?  The HIV scares in straight porn seem few and far between.  As for gay porn, I'm sure there are plenty of actors who do safesex porn and don't expect to get HIV, because they are having safe sex.

My completely uninformed impression is that there is very little HIV transmission in gay porn.  The guys who do bareback movies may or may not be HIV+ but if they are HIV+ they probably got HIV from their sex lives not their porn work.

Mason Wyler didn't get HIV from doing bareback porn, he got it from choices in his sex life.  Also, his career dried up and its not clear he's finding much work in bareback porn at all.  Recent suicide porn star Erik Rhodes didn't do bareback porn.  Got HIV from his sex life, not his porn work.

"A very high chance." ??   I am sure we are both uninformed about this topic, and my opinion is the opposite, then.

Mecch I never meant to say they have a high chance of getting HIV while doing on-camera work. But a guy who chooses this career probably doesn't have a very, let's say, conservative lifestyle. And most of them are hustlers.

Maybe I should have said that it's a risky lifestyle altogether. If we, who do not fuck for a living, got infected I can only assume they are at a higher risk and they certainly know it.
