Over-the-Counter Hydroxycloroquine as an HIV suppressant
« on: July 03, 2007, 04:36:32 pm »
Hi Everyone,

Today, I discovered this form of quinine that, by medical studies, shows results as a possible HIV therapy.  Here's one of many reports:

http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/abstract/112212475/ABSTRACT?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0

Comments?  Just curious, have any of you had experience with this?

I went to a local pharmacy today and they told me its now a prescription drug, no longer over the counter, wouldn't you know...   Curious if its OTC in other states?  I'm in california.

Hmm..  Seems the link doesn't work as posted on the forum.   Here's my Google search, and the link (today) third from the top.

Well, the chloroquin works against malaria, the protease inhibitor works against HIV. No surprise then that a mixture of both drugs works against both diseases. What's new about this? Or did I miss the point?

Problem is that the in vivo tests have been done back in 1993 and 1995. The recent studies reference those from 1993  , so we need more real studies done to see the real effect. But it's interesting!

Cerrid,

The point is, HCQ works as an HIV inhibitor, and costs $60 a month, vs $2000+ for the cocktails.

I'm not on meds right now, and something like this could be a good cheap way to push out the inevitable.

Milker, keep writing!  I enjoy reading your posts. (Still remembering "hiv everything... Nothing on tv, its the HIV...")

Hmm...

Here is a patent filed for the use of cloroquine and derivatives for use as an HIV inhibitor.

http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/5668149-description.html

Its also dated in the late 90s.  I'd love to find more recent information.

An in vitro study, which was published this year, can be found at:
http://www.retrovirology.com/content/4/1/6

I'll be honest, the technical stuff made my head swim!  But the literature review is interesting, and its references have links to studies done during the past 10 years. And... if I am interpreting this sentence correctly, I think a clinical trial is planned:
Quote
The significance of these findings to the in vivo setting will be identified through the study of HIV-1 infected individuals treated with CQ.

It sounds encouraging!  :)

From a link from the National Library of Medicine, a report from the Department of Clinical Immunology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, with solid evidence,  "suggesting"  HCQ and CQ for use as an HIV inhibitor, in conjunction with other meds.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=11166661&dopt=Abstract

Okay, I'm wonder if they didn't have the ball to make this a recommendation, or on the postive side, are trying to raise recognition of HCQ and CQ to the public, and also by saying "in conjunction with", hope that the drug industry adopts it.

...things that make me go, "hmmm..."

wow, here's how it works down to the protein, amino acid level.  My head is spinning!!!

Oh, another interesting site, a glossary of drugs, suppliments, etc., for poz people.

http://www.aidsmap.com/cms1032143.asp

um, I'm just posting this stuff for discussion.

Question:  Have any of you discussed HQC with your doctor?  I'd love to know what he says.

I came across this thread searching for hydroxychloroquine on the forums. I've just been offered a place in a study for treatment naive patients with CD4s greater than 500. The research nurse is going to ring me with more details, but I'm doing some legwork in the meantime.

This is the trial.

Evaluation of the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine in decreasing immune activation and viral replication in asymptomatic Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-infected patients

http://www.controlled-trials.com/mrct/trial/337129/hydroxychloroquine+

It's a rather interesting study. I see as yet there is no patient information material listed on the database entry though...

Of course you do know they're not talking about Tonic Water don't you? You are right about one thing, you do have a fantasy. I imagine drinking too much Tonic Water is probably not good for your health, especially diet.

Tonic water is a carbonated beverage that derives its somewhat bitter taste from the addition of quinine. It is usually flavored with lemon or lime, lots of sugar, and often contains caffeine.

I first put on tonic water and couldnt stand the bitter taste, so when I went back to my dr..She put me on tonic pills that was suppose to take away my leg cramps at night and the charlie horses in my legs feet and toes..

It did work great for me..But then all of a sudden they took me off it right away, and didnt say why...They said something to the effect its now good if you have hep C..
