What is this:

hint:  I have no love lost for it.

That looks like an old box of SRA reading materials that I used in elementary school as part of an advanced reading program. The things on the right are the booklets you'd read, and the smaller cards on the left contain questions you had to answer after reading. I don't think the ones in use today look quite like that though.

No love lost for it? If I'm right about what it is, I absolutely loved it. :)

Right you are, it is the SRA.  I did not like it much for I had readings problems and the teachers would just leave me alone to read the little cards as the rest of the class did other stuff.  I guessed if use correctly, it would help kids to read.

That antic has a hand crank. Makes me think some poor house slave sat there sweating over it to give relief to the "ladies".  Reminds me of that early scene in Gone With the Wind when all the ladies are napping and the slaves are fanning them.

Thought so. As soon as I set eyes on it, it took me back to my first grade classroom reading corner. My school used it in the opposite way to yours. It was kids who had a more advanced reading level who were sat in the corner with it so the teacher could spend more one-on-one teaching time with kids who were struggling. Sounds like your school wasn't really using it as it was intended or to its best advantage, which is shame.

edited to add... The only reason I was at an advanced reading level was thanks to my elderly uncle who lived with us when I was small. Every day he would sit me on his lap for hours while he read the newspaper (or sometimes books) aloud to me while he ran his finger under the text he was reading. (He always did that regardless.) I gradually picked more and more up and was reading by the time I was three. I'll always love my Uncle Willy for giving me such a love of reading at such a young age. I still miss him and he's been gone for over 40 years.

Yeah, I felt isolated and alone where upon when my mommy found out what they did she made a big fuss about how they left me alone.  Oh yeah, she burned their ears off.  I guess they did not know how to use it and I was the experiment chosen to see if it worked.  I do remember it had something to do with advance student learning, but I did not read much in those days because of my dyslexia; no one knew what that was in the 60's.  I would read a sentence or two then quit because my eyes and head would ache and it was too painful to continue. But I am better now and when I tutor students, I better understand their problems and help them over come it.
