Housing Works Blog: Action Alert: Join the Fight to Support the Affordable Care Act and Reject Repeal Efforts

Later this month we will celebrate the one-year anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act, the nation’s most significant expansion of health care coverage ever. But our celebration may be short-lived, as the vital protections and reforms in the new law are under attack by members of Congress who want to repeal or defund the entire bill or strip away key provisions.

What’s at stake? Earlier and expanded access to Medicaid coverage; affordable access to private insurance; the end to private insurer discriminatory practices; investments in innovative approaches to public health and prevention; increased resources for HIV testing; increased access to comprehensive medical home care; and reduced drug costs under Medicare Part D.

Full enactment of the Affordable Care Act is critical to meet and exceed the goals of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy of reducing HIV incidence, improving access to care, and reducing HIV-related disparities.

Don’t let Congress set us back. More than 500,000 people with HIV without reliable access to HIV care are depending on it as part of the 32 million who stand to gain health coverage under ACA.

The petitions are sponsored by the HIV Health Care Access Working Group of the Federal AIDS Policy Partnership. They will be distributed to Congressional members on March 23rd to commemorate the ACA one-year anniversary.

Fighting to end AIDS and homelessness.

Thanks for posting this, Marco! I added my name.

We all need to take every chance available to make our voices heard about health care - and in particular HIV health care. We have to speak up for ourselves because there sure isn't any guarantee that anyone else is going to speak up for us.

Now is a very important time to contact your Federal and State legislators as many budgets, on the local and federal level, are being worked on and debated. Because they might not even know the facts, all of these representatives need to hear from us about how important proper health care is for HIV positive people.

Three key points to get across are:
1) it's cheaper to cover HIV meds than to cover the cost of a citizen, going without medication, in a hospital with AIDS-related illnesses.
2) it's more humane to cover HIV meds to keep citizens healthier and alive, than allowing them to get desperately ill or even to die from the progression of their untreated HIV disease.
3) Many HIV+ citizens on treatment can remain healthy enough to continue working and paying their fair share of their own treatment through taxes.
