false negative rapid tests
« on: June 14, 2013, 07:26:26 pm »
Hi everyone

Recently I have had digestive issues( loose stools, excessive gas, cramps) no energy and a whitish tongue. after searching symptoms I did 4 Oraquick home tests and took a Uni Gold Recombigen at Planned Parenthood. All were negative. I had never tested before. I've been with the same woman for the past 10 years but I had a few high risk encounters. The most concerning, a threesome with a friend and a female stripper. We did not use condoms for vaginal sex. My friend tested negative a few years after this encounter. I've read a lot about false negative rapid tests and late stage HIV. The internet has loads of case studies. My questions are:

Is it possible for my tests to be false negatives? Would I have detectable antibodies after all these years?  Has anybody had a false negative test in the forum?

How accurate are these rapid tests? Are they similar or is there some that's better than the rest?

I was diagnosed with low testosterone,Vitamin D deficient, and high cholesterol can these or any other illnesses, meds cause false negatives?

My doctor looked at my tongue for maybe 2 seconds and said Thrush. Gave me Nystatin swish and swallow which did nothing. My dentist says its nothing but says my tongue is whiter than most tongues. If it were thrush wouldn't the medicines worked?

My mouth was very dry when I took the Oraquick tests, how would I know if enough fluids got on the test stick. (the control line appeared each time)

Basically this has occupied my mind for the past few months and I cant seem to shake it. thank you for your time.

The HIV test you took are accurate and you do not have HIV .

If you were testing negative from late stage HIV you would be bedridden , covered in sores and cancer , you would be in horrible pain and unable to eat or drink on your own .
This situation doesn't apply to you .

Your symptoms are not specific to HIV so we never discuss symptoms , if you are feeling ill go see your doc and find out why because its not HIV .

You can trust your test results as conclusive that you do not have HIV .

I meant to say the high risk encounters were over 10 years ago. Before my current situation.

I'm removing the post I quoted so you still have 2 follow up questions . I meant to add that if you have thrush its very , horribly painful ... so if your white tongue isn't sending you to the emergency room or urgent care it probably isn't thrush . I have had thrush many times , I will never forget the pain .

Worried,

I got it that you are worried about events ten years ago. You didn't get hiv from them.

If you were experiencing "end stage" aids - which is the only time people have been shown to shut down hiv antibody production - as Jeff said, you'd be on your deathbed. That's what "end stage" means. Terminal. Dying.

You've got some gut issues and a white tongue - but you're far from dying (provided of course you are careful crossing busy streets).

GO. SEE. YOUR. DOCTOR. Quit self-diagnosing your symptoms as end stage aids and find out what is actually going on. Whatever that may be, you have more than conclusively ruled hiv out of the picture.

You do NOT have hiv.

Hi everyone

Just a few follow up questions. Is there anything that can cause a false negative Uni gold or Oraquick test? Botching the blood draw with the finger stick or not enough OMT on the swab stick? Case studies on the net always seem to have a few false negatives with the rapid tests without any real explanation. Also a question about thrush, can it be rubbed of easily? I have this white stuff on the gums that can be peeled away, it looks like dead skin. It appears on the inner cheeks sometimes as well.

Worried Guy , you do not not have HIV so quit obsessing over a condition you do not have , if you are unwell go see your doctor and find out why because you are wasting your time and energy perusing HIV as a factor in your health concerns .

If you had thrush you would know it because it would be so painful that you would be asking us why am I in agony and not what is this white stuff in my mouth .

The bottom line is you are going to have to trust that you do not have HIV , if you cant accept our assessment then perhaps its time to discuss your HIV phobia with a professional .

I'm really sorry for being back but I can't shake this. I just want to move on with my life and I'm still having symptoms. I still worry everyday about a possible false negative on the Uni gold and Oraquick oral rapid tests. Is there any way a rapid test can miss a longer established infection? I keep getting this white stuff inside my cheeks and occasionally on the side of tongue. I can peel it off with my fingernail and it looks and feels like dry skin. Does this sound like thrush or is thrush more of a creamy texture? I'm always tired, still get the runs, and get these red pimple like bumps on my chest. I really really want to move on but I'm scared of the false negatives and that I'll end up on my death bed.

You should be discussing what you call your symptoms with your doctor. They have nothing to do with HIV.

You also need to know we are not going to indulge you in an endless round of what ifs and doubts. HIV is not your problem. Period.

If you continue to return here with more of the same you are going to find yourself getting a Time Out for 28 days from the site. Cut it out and get on with your life and have a checkup with your doctor.
