Trojan Spermicide Lubricated Condom - HIV Risk?
« on: April 25, 2017, 07:09:11 am »
Hello,

I met up with a casual encounter over 3 weeks ago.

I thought I was being very careful by doing the following:

- I brought my own condoms
- checked expiration date
- put the condom on my partner each time
- changed the condom (brand new) for vaginal sex (2X) and when I performed oral sex on my partner (new condom)
- lots of French kissing
- he fingered me

My fear is that I read Spermicide Lubricated Latex Condoms protect ONLY for pregnancy but not HIV/STD.  I read that Spermicide condoms increase HIV infection.

I did not notice the condom break or slip.  I thought I was being protected and having safe sex until I read about Spermicide Lubricated Latex condom.

Kindly asses my HIV risk.  I went for a rapid HIV test at 3 weeks and it was negative.

I know 13 weeks is the accurate result.  However,  do you think I need further HIV testing based on the above?

Also what is my HIV risk?

Thank you

Hi , An intact condom protected you against the virus during intercourse, kissing and fingering are not risks.
Remember other STIs are much easier to transmit and anyone who is sexually active should be screened regularly for all STIs regularly .
If this was your only concern it is safe to move on.

Thanks so much Wade.

I just got scared when I heard Spermicide lubricated Latex condoms don't protect against HIV/STDs.

Is that true I'm so confused.

Do I need the 13 week test based on my above activities?

I just hope it stays negative

You can test at 13 weeks for peace of mind only and expect a negative result
Going forward use latex condoms and water based lubes

Thanks Wade.

The Spermicide was already included on the lubricated Latex condom.

Does the Spermicide make protection against HIV/STD less

Is my risk higher now because I bought condoms that contained Spermicide on the lubicated Latex condom?

The spermicide could cause irritation in some which would increase your chance of infection had the condom failed. As I said your best bet is to use latex condoms and water based lube in the future.

Dude.

Please stop asking about this and do not post again. Wade has given you an accurate assessment and that is final.

The spermicide on this condom is applied for extra (additional) protection against pregnancy. The spermicide does not on its own give additional STI or HIV protection, the latex condom however does and HIV can not transmit through an intact latex condom. So spermicide or not this makes no difference to your none existent HIV risk.

Move on and continue to practice safer sex, and test at least yearly as routine for STI's including but not limited to HIV.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

More information on HIV Basics, PEP, TaSP and Transmission can be found through the links in my signature to our POZ pages, this includes information on HIV Testing

Kind regards

Jim
