Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

"Second window" testing period??

Hello all! I'm a female and was raped over 2 months ago by a male who i thought was my friend. His status is unknown. Exactly one week later i got a fever that lasted only a few hours. Almost a month later i got other symptoms such as swollen glands and fatigue. That went on for almost a month and is still current but more mild. I realize you guys don't discuss symptoms i just figured i'd inform you since they're the main reason why i'm so upset right now. At 6.5 weeks after exposure i tested with the antigen/antibody test and it came back negative. I started to feel comforted but as i read more online i discovered there was a window period. I realize i have to test again at 3 months but these past few weeks of waiting have been absolute anxiety and depression hell. I don't really know what i'm looking for right now. Advice, any words on my situation, what my odds are, any words of support. I'll take any and all.

A negative 6 week test is not going to change at 12 weeks, however you still need to test at 12 weeks, just to confirm your results.  You should be confident that your 12 week result will also be negative.

I appreciate the info Joe. And although i've been really sick, i'm hoping that's exactly what will happen at my 3 month mark.

The reason we do not discuss symptoms is that they can be caused by many things.  If you had a risk, your 6 week test would likely have not been negative.  I have yet to see a 6 week test change at the 12 week mark and you should be confident that your result will be negative.

With the antigen/antibody tests, is the "second window period" true or false? If it is true, i feel my test was taken right within that time period (6.5 weeks after exposure) which makes my wait to test at the 3 month mark even more awful. Especially since i have symptoms i've never had in my life before as well.

Testing guidelines are to test at 6 weeks and then at 12 weeks to confirm the results.  You already have a negative result at 6 weeks, which is unlikely to change at the 12 week confirmation test.
