new job starts Monday!
« on: July 25, 2008, 11:26:53 pm »
After what I've called a whirlwind courtship that began Wednesday around noon and ended with a meeting with senior management at my new employer this morning, I accepted a fantastic offer to start a new job Monday morning.  Rather than continue with applications development roles for companies, usually in a consulting role, I leaped at the opportunity to work in business development for a mid-sized federal contractor that will give me an amazing commute.  I can park at my gym about 3 miles from home (heck, I might bicycle in the fall) and walk to the office five blocks away after my morning workout.  If I want to be more environmentally conscious, I'll hop on the subway or a bus.

So, Monday morning after turning in my onboarding papers and getting a badge, I'll get to sit the new manager down for a discussion of HIV and my other medical issues.  I'm looking forward to the conversation, as I staked out an additional role for myself this morning to champion diversity after taking the VPs to task for having no discussion of workforce diversity on their website.  This is definitely the most exciting opportunity which I have entertained in seven or eight years, and I want the new team to take pride in all that I bring to their team, including the hivvies and my neurosurgical ordeals.

Namaste,
David

Thanks to all for the good wishes...... and Peter, I'll give you a woodie ;D  (where's a devil horns smiley?)

I've got my clothes packed for changing at the gym in the morning.  Lots of healthful snacks in my backpack, too, along with Crystal Light sleeves for a 20-ounce.  And, of course, all of the lovely forms I've been completing over the weekend.

The idyllic commute got me studying over the weekend something which I haven't done since I was a kid:  riding a bicycle.  One of the major trails in Northern Virginia runs along the end of my block and leads to another major trail that runs within three blocks of the office.  On nice days it would be such a great option, esp with the many hot men out jogging or cycling  ;D  I haven't been on a bike for about 35 years because of balance issues from ear problems and hydrocephalus, but I found quite by accident that adult stabilizer wheels are available for around $65.  Ah, but if I drop 10-15 pounds, I will be truly insufferable, I fear.

Cheers,
David

Gald to report that when I finally got to speak with my new manager today in private, he was more taken with my honesty and openness than fearful of anything with my health.  As an undergraduate student, he had a job working in an eye clinic where a number of CMV retinitis trials were done;  so, he's familiar with HIV from dealing with one potential issue connected to AIDS diagnosis, though he's not familiar with a long-term non-progressor.  As for the brain stuff, he's amazed that I can function.

Cheers,
David

Hi David,
Congrats on your new job, sounds like it went really well. :)

I wanted to ask you a question if you don't mind:  Why did you feel it necessary to let your boss know about your hiv?  Maybe I missed something previously, I don't know.  Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that you were courageous enough to do so, because me, I'm not so sure I would be able to.  Just wondering what your reasons are.

Wow, congrats on the job!  The commute / proximity to your gym sounds great, too.  I especially like the part about your being open about HIV.  That's doing a real service for the rest of us.

Thanks, again, everyone for the good wishes.  My openness about my health has been limited to my manager and HR so far, but I am confident that I will out both the brain surgeries and the HIV to other co-workers soon enough.  I am driven to be open about these things because so much of the business is built on honesty and good character, and being open about HIV and my neurological stuff leaves no doubt about the truthfulness of what I say.

Best,
David
