Each weekend the New York Times Magazine ends with a one page essay.  Today's, by Bernard Cooper, was adapted from a memoir about life with his partner.

beautiful in a very sad way

i was just thinking back to one year ago this evening. It has just taken me an hour to drive back to the hospital (normally a 10-min trip) after checking on the house and the dogs in the middle of a 26-in blizzard. Earlier in the day, the doctor had told us that Jim had AIDS.

I spent many hours over the next few days listening to the ticks of the IV machines, watching the antibiotics and blood dripping through the tubes, unable to understand anything I saw on the TV sets that I passed in the hospital lounge. The images, loud and overpowering, of an existence that I wasn't a part of anymore. Just five days later, when we should have been celebrating my 46th birthday, we were told Jim also had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

It's weird now, reliving and reviewing the events of last year. Each day I read an entry from my blog and recall the horrors, cry a little, and reflect on how far I have come back, living a life without Jim. This year as I turn 47 (on the 14th) I'll be celebrating 47 days without a cigarette.  ;D After the cake and hoopla though, I'll be reading the next blog entry. There's an entry for the 60 horrible days Jim suffered in the hospital and then another 9 days while I cared for him at our home. God, I miss my Jim.

Acting like a mover shaker
Dancing to Madonna then you kissed me
And I think about it all the time
