False Negatives....
« on: October 13, 2009, 09:13:47 am »
I found out one of my best friends was positive back in March 09 I believe, when he was admitted to the hospital. He had pcp and ks. His cd4 was only 20 at the time and so on and so on....
He is doing fantastic now! But we were talking the other day and he said that he had found out he was positive for the first time while in the hospital as well.

He had been treated for Crones Disease for a while due to losing weight and diarrhea. During the whole time testing negative for HIV. He had never tested positive ever until he ended up in the hospital with a cd4 of only 20! How can this be?

He said his last test was 8 months before he was admitted to the hospital and he has his paperwork to prove he tested negative. This is just amazing to me and scary as hell....has anyone heard of this type of story before? How long can someone test negative while your immune system is being destroyed by this disease?
If you wish to see the best in others, show the best of yourself.

hi RedBull ,
I have heard of this also !

I find it ODD  doctors WON"T  do a blood work up  IF   you are   in a high risk group

UNLESS   the swab  test  shows   POS.

I believe there was a thread  on  this ???   Anyone ????

                                           Be well ,

Hi Redbull,

I think my story is quite the same.  I had a series of tests, just about every 6 months, always coming back as neg. Went for a routine physical, and got a positive result.  My first CD4 count was 53.  My last negative test was May 22, 2009.  My Positive test was Sept 17, 2009 so in just 4 months, my CD4 went down to 53.

My doctor said there are a small group of people who have no natural ability to fight HIV -- he thinks I may (unfortunately) fall into this group.  Sounds to me like your friend may have they same kind of genetic (bad) luck.  The good news is that HAART seems to be as effective for "Rapid progressors" as the normal population, and with care and the right meds, we can regain and fight the infection.

Best of luck to both you and your friend.  I can say first hand it isn't easy when your experience falls totally outside the "norm" of what everyone else has -- there just are no answers.  That does not mean, however, the outcome can't be good, too.  This is why it is so important to be tested every 6 months.  Had I waited, there is no question I would have ended up in the hospital with an OI.

I had a a negative in May 1996 and a positive tesst in June 1997 with 220 cd 4 and 500 000 vl,
the doctor who saw me in June thought the negative test might have been a false negative.I dunno.
