Just told my mother I have HIV!
« on: January 14, 2017, 11:27:15 am »
When I first was diagnosed, I was traumatized and could not see a future. I went into despair. Since then (over two months ago), I've been slowly coming to grips with the disease and have been trying to live my life and not let it limit me. I'm at a somewhat good place now on most days. But, I've been feeling like a monkey has been on my back. My mother and I've always had a great relationship. She's my best friend. I've always been able to talk to her about anything but I was afraid that her knowing my diagnosis, it would kill her!! Considering she's been through a lot these last few years, I didn't want to be the cause of her going into the hospital for stress over me or the cause of her having a heart attack or something major because of word of my diagnosis. After careful thought, looking at the pro's and con's, I decided to tell her.

To my surprise, she was calm, cool and collective :D. She was also very supportive. She said "I love you no matter what", "now, its like any other disease, the treatment that's out can help you live a very long life--look at Majic Johnson".

I would have to say that me telling her and getting this BIG secret off of my chest has brought us closer and has given me the motivation to fight this disease even harder. I refuse to allow HIV/AIDS to hinder me and prevent me from enjoying my life.

Thanks so much!! Yes, I've been on azithromycin and bactrim since first diagnosed. After diagnosis, my doctor ran more blood work and saw my CD count was so surprisingly low. He said I'll have to take them for a while until my CD levels rise. I had thrush a month and a half ago.

It is a very nice thing to be able to tell a loved one, look I have this thing, but really it's ok cause I'm taking care of it...
Then that classic response, 'you have my full support and love'.

Life suddenly looks a whole lot better. Well done.

So and very happy to know all went well with your mum.

Ive been thinking about telling mine, but just lost s brother a few months ago from a heart attack, she's been really down and don't want to give her more worries. I will have to wait until I have the guts to tell her but your post gave me some hope.

Thanks for sharing

The network of support is one of the columns that help us keep standing. Take those little pills and you'll be great. Congratulations and more blessings (you already have one, a loving and caring mom).
