Complicated
« on: September 10, 2008, 11:17:54 am »
Hi,

After reading a thousand posts on this web site, i decided to post one more.

I'm a 30 year old male. And my situation is a bit complicated. On May 3, 2008 i met a girl. Was like love at first sight and we dated for 2,5 months and had unprotected sex for like hundred times. On July 15,2008 i left her, because i actually found out that she was dating with other men at the same time. She told me she had sex with only 1 person before me in her life and unfortuantely that was a lie too. I talked with one of her ex-bfs and he said he got gonore from her (i believed him, i have my reasons)

And the panic began. On July 26,2008 (12 days later from the last expose, almost 60 days later from the first) i tested for anti-hiv 1/2 and hepatisis, they were negative. On July 29,2008 (15 days later from last expose) i took VDRL-RPR and TPHA tests; both negative.

I felt so terrible that i called her and asked her to meet me and take a hiv test (Because she completed her 3 month period by that time). She tested and it was negative. I asked her if she had sex with anyone during the time she was with me. She said no, but i wasn't satisfied of course. And if she had sex with anyone during that time, that hiv test result was nothing but a lie. Just like her words.

On September 09,2008, yesterday (54 days later from the last expose, and almost 102 days from first expose) i took an anti-hiv 1/2, p24 antigen test and it was negative. That's a good thing and felt great. Yet it's not over.

I'm not going to mention about the symptoms of hiv since that forum is full of people mentioning and i'm kinda aware that symptoms are not the measure for hiv, only lab tests are.

But couple of weeks ago, i noticed some stains on my penis similar to the ones in herpes and went to a doctor. She said they were stains just because i'm circumsized. I can swear that i didnt noticed them before, but it's still hard to say since i'm very very stressed because of a possible hiv infection.

My question is; it's been almost 2 months from the last expose and nearly 3,5 months from the first expose. Is this the right time for a herpes test and other STD tests? I just want to be sure, but because of the window periods of viruses, i can't do a thing. And even if i do, my mind keeps on procuding new scenarios.

Besides all; i trusted her. I was stupid enough (with an IQ of 151) to trust a girl and have unprotected sex for the first time in my life. Why do people lie? ( I don't expect an answer to that one )

And sorry for my bad english.

wiploc,

The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks. A six week negative must be confirmed at the three month point, but is unlikely to change. I don't expect your negative hiv result to change when you test at three months.

Apart from syphilis, which shares a three month window with hiv, you can test for the other STIs ten days to two weeks after a worrying incident, or sooner if you experience an unusual discharge.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Hi Ann,

Thanks for the quick reply. The fact is that i always used condoms, except this one. And she insisted on me not to use, and i didn't. This is so sad for me, so sad that maybe any of you can't imagine. I've never had sex with a prostitude in my life and never cheated on any of my girl friends.

Now i'm sitting on my computer and surfing the net looking at symptoms and forum posts, and keep thinking which disease(s) i'm facing here..

Anyway.. As far as i can see, this is just the time where i should go and take all STI tests right? (Can you write them down?) And one more question; what do you think about the negative results of VDRL-RPR and TPHA tests after 14-15 days of exposure? Are they conclusive?

wip,

Did you bother actually reading my whole post? I already told you that syphilis shares a three month window period with hiv. Your negatives are encouraging, but not conclusive.

Hi again,

I don't think i'll make it. This is driving me crazy. It's been 57 days from the last exposure and i just can't do a thing in my life except thinking over and over again. Should i take a HIV-RNA PCR test? And if it shows negative, does it mean i can rely on it?

Thanks in advance

You can rely on the RNA test after you take you antibody test at 3 months. An RNA test is a supplemental test and it is not a stand alone test.

Wip,

You need to chill out. Your negative results are not likely to change. You've been told this.

Hi again,

Just wondered something. She had asthma and is allergic to milk like things. Is it possible for her to test negative after 3 months even if she's infected with HIV? This may be a silly question, but wondered anyway.

Thanks

wip,

The only people who might take longer than three months to seroconvert and test positive are those who are on chemotherapy for cancer, anti-rejection drugs following organ transplant, or have been injecting street drugs DAILY, for years.

The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks. A six week negative must be confirmed at the three month point, but is unlikely to change. I don't expect your negative hiv result to change when you test at three months. I've already told you this; please don't make me keep repeating myself.

Given your result at 54 days, that is a very good indication that you will continue to test negative.

In the meantime you need to get productively busy with other things in your life. And yes, you really can do that. It will help the rest of the waiting time to pass much more easily than you may imagine is possible.

I expect you will come out of this ok. The lesson you need to learn from this is that until you are in securely monogamous relationship in which both partners have tested negative together, until then always use a condom. No exceptions and don't be in a rush to stop to using condoms.

Good luck on your test. Keep us posted.

Cheers,
Andy Velez

Thank you Andy.

It's so relieving to get answers from you and other admins/members on this site. You are doing a great job, i'm telling about this site here in Turkey to other people who share the same fears and questions with me.

I'll try to get busy with things in my life until it's time to get tested again as you adviced. And i can really say that i've learned my lesson on this.

I hope i'll test negative at the end of 3 months. I'll keep you posted no matter what happens.

Glad to hear you're promoting the site to others. Better information reaching more people who then  commit to consistently practicing safer sex with condoms consistently is a major key to stopping this epidemic.

Hi,

That's the 67th day from the last possible expose, and i went to a lab for HIV and HSV testing. They took my blood and said that i'll get the results on thuesday (3 days after).

Today is saturday, so the blood in tube will be idle for almost two days. Does that effect the test? I don't know how they keep the tubes but just wanted to know. This may be a silly question, sorry.

Thanks in advance

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to inform you about my test results and see if you can advice me about those.

First off; HIV combo test result after 66days of exposure is NEGATIVE. I know it's not conclusive but feels good.

STD Tests & Results
----------------------------------------
HSV-1 IgM POSITIVE (1.5) Index (NEGATIVE < 0.8, POSITIVE > 1.1)
HSV-1 IgG POSITIVE (128) RU/mL (NEGATIVE < 16, POSITIVE > 22)
HSV-2 IgM: NEGATIVE (0.2) Index (NEGATIVE <0.8, POSITIVE > 1.1)
HSV-2 IgG: NEGATIVE (< 2.0) RU/mL (NEGATIVE < 16, POSITIVE > 22)
VDRL: NEGATIVE
HIV Ag/Ab COMBI TEST (ELFA): NEGATIVE

I know this is a HIV forum, and i'm not going to post a thousand post about HSV. I'll actually take the results to a doctor asap. But just curious; what do IgM and IgG stand for? The doctor at lab told me that it doesn't make sense to test pos for both IgM and IgG. Made a quick search about pos values on yahoo and it's said that, the higher IgG means an earlier infection. Is that true?

Thanks in advance

PS: First thing i wondered was if HSV would effect the HIV test but made a search about it on this site and actually found out that it wouldn't:]

Wip,

You're right, this isn't a herpes forum. You need to discuss your herpes results with your doctor. I will say this though, hsv1 is extremely common.

I still do not expect your hiv results to change.

When IgM is detected it normally indicates a primary infection, IgG indicates past infection....but as Ann said this is an HIV forum and you are better off talking to your doctor about your results.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to tell you that i've tested negative after 90 days of the possible exposure. I'd like to thank everyone for their support. Especially Andy, Ann and Annie (In alphabetical order :]) You're doing a great job, please just keep up the good work.

To everyone who's waiting for the right time to get tested, try to stay away from google and try to get busy with other things in your life. You'll start to feel much more better and the waiting time will pass much more easily. (I'd like to give credits to Andy here:])

That's great to know you've tested negative as we hoped and expected.

The best thing you can do is to always without exception use condoms for intercourse. By practicing safer sex consistently you will be helping to stop the epidemic. The only way the epidemic is going to be gotten under control is by cutting down the infection rate. Share that information with others and you will be doing good work.

I'm glad you found this site helpful to you when you needed it.

Good luck to you.

Thanks Andy,

I'm sharing everything i've learned from this site with others in Turkey. Even most of the doctors here are still not aware of correct times for testing and stuff. Whenever i see a panicked person wandering on forums with a conclusive negative test result, i reference to this site and keep telling him/her what you've been telling me for months.

Thanks so much again.
