Breakfast at Tiffany's
« on: July 30, 2006, 04:06:17 pm »
We just watched "Breakfast at Tiffany's"....I always cry at the end when Holly goes back in the rain and finds Cat.....

Capote actually wanted Marilyn Monroe to play the part of Holly...can you imagine that?  I can't.

In my opinion, we have no one today in the same league as Audrey Hepburn...
but I'm a sentimental old fool.

Alanbama,

Audrey was perfect for this role and can't imagine this movie without her. Of course I'm a sentimental fool as well and always cry at the end of this movie.  ;)

Not easy these days to have actors/actress in the same class as Audrey Hepburn...just sayin' ( Jonathan's trademark )

Regards,

I suppose the movie version had to have the happy ending; the novella by Capote ends with Holly going off to Brazil if I remember right. I've always thought that Sally Bowles (in Isherwood's Berlin Stories, played by Liza Minelli in Cabaret) was a kind of ancestor of Holly Golightly. I've loved both characters since I was a teen. Speaking of sentimental -- I love the Mancini "Moon River" song/tune as well, don't think it cheesy at all.

Her finely-touched spirit had still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that river of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

It's funny that the movie played it safe with a happy ending but played dangerous with having George Peppard  play(Paul 'Fred' Carjack) as a  gigolo; he isn't that in the novella and has no sexual relationship with Holly at all. But it does make for a good cinematic balance between the story of two "whores".  Blake Edwards has stated that, if he could,he'd do away with the offensive Mickey Rooney portrayal of Mr.Yunioshi , a character that is in the novella for only a few lines. Maybe in a "director's cut" he will.  But, as for Marylin doing the role of Holly.....every word on the page is Audrey Hepburn to a "T".

By the way, the black dress Audrey wore in the movie is up for auction; if any of you have a spare 50,000 pounds, now's your chance!

Alan.........Yeah buddy.  I loved that movie.  Loved Audrey Hepburn in everything she played...
And Yes I could imagine Marilyn doing the movie...of course it would have taken years for her
to remember her lines......... :o

But then I loved movies like "Some Like it Hot" &  "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds"
I'm such a homo ::)
