Can I have plastic surgery if I am in Haart?
« on: November 06, 2007, 03:38:16 am »
I am thinking about lipo suction.   I am now in Haart.  Would it be OK for me to do that plastic surgery, or, it is better off for HIVer not to take any operatiion?

Also, if it is OK for plastic surgery, will any antibiotic I shall not take while the wound is recovered?

Thanks for help.

hahaha:

Plastic surgery is by no means contraindicated in people with HIV. Of course, it's a good idea for your pastic surgeon to know that you're HIV positive and to have a record of the medications you're taking. This will reduce the risk of drug interactions between any prescribed antibiotics -- or any other medications used before, during or after the surgery -- and your HIV meds. What's more, you can always encourage your plastic surgeon to consult with your primary care doc (or HIV specialist) if there are any lingering questions or concerns.

Edited to add: Is the liposuction for lipodystrophy (a buildup of "hard" visceral fat deep within the belly) or for run-of-the-mill subcutaneous fat gain (the "squishy" fat immediately beneath the skin)? If it's the former, this could be problematic -- this fat is very difficult to remove and is a risky procedure, given that it's the fat that surrounds various organs in the abdomen that can puncture easily if liposuction is attempted).

I think cosmetic surgery is ok, depending on your overall general health.  I had elective surgery (not lipo though).  The doctor new my status and didn't have any issues.  He just did the normal tests and heart checks to determine if I was ok to do the surgery.
