Title: My first earthquake
Post by: Cliff on February 27, 2008, 08:21:29 am
While laying in the bed last night, I felt our building shake for a few seconds.  For a moment, I wondered whether the building was about to collapse.  But the shaking went away quickly, and I figured it must have been a low flying plane.  Well I just read on the BBC that there was an earthquake in England last night!

yay!!! my first one!

Many years ago, we (here in Indiana in the US) had a small quake.  I was working in a liquor store, and all the bottles of wine and liquor started shaking.  I remember thinking, what in the hell are we going to do if they all fall off the shelves and break.  Luckily, not one of them did.  That would have been a major loss.

Hey come to California!

The Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 was probably the most frightening one I have experienced. I was knocked to the ground. I also lost everything in my apartment. I had to stay with someone for several weeks before repairs were made. The eeriest feeling was watching reports about the freeways collapsing crushing the cars underneath. I had a delivery job at the time and I normally drive the Nimitz freeway (880). Fortunately, for me, my route changed for the day.

Slept right through it.  It's all over the bloody news, even though it seems to have only brought down a few chimneys and broke some nick nacks.

I remember one years ago, again in the middle of the night. Thought I was slipping off the bed.

I remember m first one.  Woke up at around sometime in the middle of the night to the sound of the security gates of the store across the street ratling.  Being that it was NYC, I just assumed they were being robbed or looted and went back to sleep.

I think we had one here a few years back. Nothing major and I didn't feel a thing.

We've had about half a dozen or so earthquakes in the time I've been living on the west coast.  I've slept through all of them.  One day we'll get a big one and I'm looking forward to the mayhem that ensues...

I was at this meeting. I looked across the room and there he was. Looking all shiny and new. ...and the earth moved. There actually was significant collateral damage, but it took a while to become evident. And a long time to recover.

Actually, to be accurate that wasn't my first earthquake. The first happened when I was a kid in Puerto Rico. I remember watching a jagged line start up the wall from the floor. The earth trembled and it seemed as if everything was very quiet. It was weird.

I had to love the little old northern English lady I just saw on the news. "I fought me boiler had exploded". I just wanted to squeeze her cheeks and give her a kiss.
