Got any tips for career day?
« on: January 26, 2019, 04:05:29 pm »
Ahhh yeah.... my class teacher is organising a career day and has 10 hotels job interviewing us for receptionists.
So yeah,it's the first time I ever go in an interview.
Worst thing is she said to wear job interview clothes, which I'm certain I don't have. Plus I will probably look stupid in them.
Any tips for the dress code? 😅😅😅

Hotel job, so what you want to show is that you are clean, tidy, neat and know how to dress.

All the people I interview are for office jobs, mostly managers etc. but a few  thoughts i would have on what to wear:

- Nice light colored shirt, that fits! Badly fitting shirts is the worst.
- Darker colored chinos/trousers
- Black shoes (Real shoes, so not flip-flops or trainers)
- Accessories. A watch & belt. Now as its a hotel job choose a plain analog watch so nothing fancy or flash or better than the customer would have but something that says " I am neat & reliable" for the presentation

Finally on the day "Shower, shit and shave and also cut your finger nails! If you smell, look like a bum, or need to shit during the interview or have dirty nails there is no way i want you to represent my business.

This blog posting is not bad BTW http://www.vault.com/blog/interviewing/10-things-men-should-never-wear-to-an-interview/

Gotta prepare buying then haha, cuz I look like a thug teen right now.....
It's so inconvenient that my dad doesn't have a button white shirt (which I will have to buy.ugh) or any chinos that will fit my big butt.
For the rest I think I can make an exception for that day and shave.....

I do have some sky blue chinos, but I think I will look like the circus.....
Or I can crash diet for five days until my butt becomes fitted into my dad's chinos.....

Hi,

The points that Jim gave are on point.

Many times you find some great interview clothes at Goodwill (second-hand clothing store).  Dress clothes can be expensive but this is a great option for most.  Even asking your friends if they have anything you could wear might be another good option.

Also, since I work in HR I wanted to give a few other key points of interest.

1)  Make sure to arrive a few minutes early to the interview.  10 minutes is acceptable but not much sooner or later.

2)  Bring a few copies of your resume with you to the interview.  Sometimes the interview committee may not have your resume and this is a nice added touch.  Also, bring a pad of paper and a pen/pencil so you can take notes (if needed)

3)  Do a little research about the company as the traditional last question they will ask you "Is what questions do you have for us?"  It is great to know something about them to ask them about.  It shows your interest.

4)  If you have a cell phone turn it off prior to the interview.

Best of luck and remember to breathe.  You'll do great.

Thank you so.much!!!
I already found cheap (but stylish) clothes to get for the interview.
It's a mass interview basically, there are gonna be many hotel representatives,so I will probably get a job. Judging by the rest of my classmates/competition I'm gonna make it.
Thank you so much for the tips both of you :)

I am not in the habit of telling anyone what to do . If you feel your are doing your best then you should feel your best.

at this point in time with medications maintaining  relatively good health you should have a long productive life and career with this type of work so you should not have any doubts about landing a good job.

My last job interview was for hotel work. I went to  the interview wearing khakis loafers and blue button down oxford shirt. The front desk clerk at the hotel  I first talked to was wearing the same outfit.  I bet he thought I was interviewing for his job by the way his eyes bugged when I said I was there for a job interview.

I was there for a position of assistant custodian. I did not take the job.   reason being it was in the nineties and I thought did i really want to commute for what just might be a summer job fighting summer traffic to unclog toilets on what might be my last healthy summer of my life .  this was a long time ago at that time I was taking AZT.  and thinking a I had maybe year or so left to live.

Not that you should even entertain such a thought  I hope you many years of healthy living. Hotel clerk seems to be to be great job. GO and do great  things

Update: I did it!!! I was the only person prepared dressed well for a job interview with resumes in hand. All my other classmates were either rude, not dressed properly and no-one had resumes on hand.
I did 5 interviews in a row and they plan to put me in some kind of shift (preferably night). Also,my other classmates made fun of me because I took this seriously and obviously they ate  my dust haha.
I thank you all for your very useful and amazing tips

I start for summer season. I have 4 choices basically. One called me tonight and the money isn't much and it's far. I will get my answer tomorrow or next day.
Basically in my island we have seasonal jobs unfortunately,so I will be hopefully starting in May.
