Hello everyone, I recently had un-protected sex with a man where I was the top (the one that inserts) and he was the bottom (the one that takes).  It only went in half-way about 4 or 5 times before I pulled out to ejactulate.   If he was to be HIV+, what are the chances that I have picked up it up?  I know theres alot of factors to figure something like that out, but from just from the intercourse alone, can someone give me a rough estimate of me picking up HIV?  He says he wasn't  + but I really don't know if he's telling the truth or not.  I'm probably overly worried about this but I keep kicking myself in the ass for having unprotected sex with him.  I always use protection for anal but I got caught up in the heat of the moment and let my guard down.  Any help is appreciated, thanks

You have had a risk and you do need to test. Although you stand a very good chance of coming out of this brief, one time incident ok, I'm not going to put a number on it. One in how ever many people being infected this way is not much use if you turn out to be the one.

As the vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks, a test at that time would be an excellent indication of your true status, but must be confirmed at the three month point.

You can't EVER go by what a person says about their serostatus unless you have tested together. Some people lie and some people just assume they are hiv negative. You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

You need to test for HIV at 3 months.  Anyone who has unprotected sex should.   Never take someone's word about what their status is unless you have seen a written copy of the test result and you know that it was taken in the proper time or else have done it at the same time.

One stat I read was 6.5/10,000, but still it really is all relative and it isn't useful to worry about statistics.  Compared to someone who has unprotected anal sex as a bottom, the top has a lesser risk.  But there still is a risk.  Anal sex can cause rectal bleeding since the tissue in the rectum is delicate, which can increase the risk for the insertive partner.  Other variables can influence risk such as how often you have unprotected sex with men, since that will increase the probability of you coming into contact with someone HIV positive, but it also takes one time.  So don't worry about statistics, just realize there is a risk, test for HIV at the 3 month mark, and change your behavior accordingly--it really doesn't take that long to roll on a condom.  It is also a good idea for anyone sexually active to get regular HIV tests and for other STIs as well.

thank you for the replies.  After reading through the Transmission lesson (which I should of done before I posted this topic, sorry mods) and from your posts I think I'll be ok but will still be getting tested at the 6th week mark and the 3 month mark.  Thanks again!
