Title: Hiv and Conception. Question about sperm washing.
Post by: PinkLady4 on October 13, 2009, 10:29:54 pm
Is sperm washing used only to prevent infecting the mother or is it also necessary to prevent infecting the baby? In seroconcordant couples, is sperm washing necessary?

I would like to gather as much info as possible so I can ask my Dr. the most effective questions. Thanks.

Hi Pink,

Sperm washing is done in serodiscordant couples where the man is positive, to protect the woman's negative hiv status. It is done to protect the baby only in the sense of keeping the mother negative.

does mean that if a person is using an egg donor and a surrogate, that the baby would be negative?

Below is a link to a 22-minute film about a serodiscordant couple in England trying to get pregnant. It's part of a Showtime documentary airing in the US.

my wife is negative and I am positive. After I tested undetectable for 6 consecutive months, we decided to try and conceive naturally. We succeeded, and she has remained hiv negative.

What do you mean with "naturally"?

He means in the usual way; unprotected intercourse without condoms. Many couples are doing this nowdays.
