Title: Slept With an HIV Positive Girl
Post by: HenryO on October 18, 2011, 08:29:15 am
I had sex with an HIV positive woman without protection – Insertive Vaginal. She only told me afterwards. We did it once & for about 3 minutes.

Went to the doctors 2 days later & was given Post Exposure Prophylaxis. I started taking the pills after 62 hrs to be exact.

I am taking Reyataz & Truvada. I am now on day 20 & haven’t missed a doss.

What are my chances?? Has anyone been through such & still test negative?

I am gutted & worried sick.

Henry,

You are highly unlikely to end up positive over this brief incident, even without PEP. Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus that is more difficult to transmit from a woman to a man. With PEP, your chances of testing negative are extremely high.

I hope this serves as a lesson to you - you need to be using condoms with ANYONE, regardless of what they do or don't tell you about their hiv status beforehand.

I fully expect you to test negative.

I will never repeat this mistake i made.

Please confirm that the PEP medication really works (taken at 62hrs).

Im now on day 20 taking them.

Im really scared to go and get tested. How likely was it that i contracted the disease the first time?

Please help.

Henry,

As I have already told you, you are highly unlikely to end up positive from this brief incident, with or without PEP. And yes, PEP works provided you take it correctly. (That means taking it every day, around the same time of day each time.)

The earliest you should test post-PEP is at six weeks. The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by this time, with the average time to seroconversion being 22 days. A six week negative is highly unlikely to change, but must be confirmed at the three month point - in your case, this is three months after your last dose of PEP.

Again, you are highly unlikely to end up positive after this brief incident, with or without PEP. I fully expect you to test negative.

Hi Guys,

I went for my testing today (5 weeks post exposure and I have been taking PEP) & they did an Elisa test.

The results were Negative.

I was relieved to be honest because I had stressing the whole time, I couldn’t study, eat or concentrate.

Can you please advise, how often these results tend to change?

I would greatly appreciate any input.

Thanks in advance.

You can test again at 6 weeks past the completion of PEP. If you test negative at that point, which is likely considering the low level of your risk, then it is likely you will continue to test negative at 13 weeks past the completion of PEP. A negative at 13 weeks is a conclusive result.

Hi Guys,

I forgot to mention that when I went for my Post PEP testing they did 2 tests;

ELISA & the P24 Antigen. (I think I only mentioned the ELISA in my previous posts).

Both of these were negative.

How encouraging are these 2 results at 5 weeks post exposure & 1 week post PEP.

Thanks in advance

Henry,

As you have been told, your risk was low. PEP reduces it even more.

You have to test again 3 months after you cease PEP, but you should expect that test to be negative. All your results thus far indicate that will be the case.

So shut your word hole and go and do something productive with the time left until you test again.
