Title: Re: Boyfriend tested POZ
Post by: LadyMisty1207 on May 23, 2014, 11:33:18 pm
A week ago I found out that my boyfriend of 3 years tested positive after donating blood at a blood bank. He has had blood work done in the past 3 years since we have been together and nothing ever showed that he was positive. He did admit that he did have unprotected sex with a female before we had started to date a few months before us. I have tested negative now 3 times (one with the swap test, one with the rapid test and one with the full lab work up of my blood). I spoke to the doctor about Truvada and he informed me that I could take it since my bf is positive (his virus load is 100 copies and his cd4 is 500 right now.

Any suggestions would be very helpful at this point. I love my boyfriend and want to stay with him, I just want to be as protected at possible along with condoms for any future sexual interactions between us.

Welcome to the forum . I split your post into its own thread so it can get the attention it deserves . Im sorry you are dealing with this and hopefully you will test negative for a conclusive result ... not clear if you have been tested out to 3 months past any possible exposure or not from your post .

Truvada is very effective at preventing HIV infections if taken as directed everyday . Once you BF is undetectable and your on Prep its assured you will avoid HIV .

Thanks Jeff for splitting my post into it's own thread..the last time my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex was almost 2 months ago...so for now I am showing at negative but I will have to test myself again in about 4 to 6 weeks according to my doctor...

Don't mean to sound ignorant but what exactly do you mean "Once your BF is undetectable"??

Truvada is option for me but I need to find a new doctor because I do not feel comfortable talking and asking for this med from my current doctor..I had myself tested at an urgent care facility in order to avoid seeing my doctor...

Remember, you can have intercourse with condoms and not be at risk for HIV.  You don't have to be on Truvada / PrEP to be risk free.

When your boyfriend has an undetectable viral load, and for several tests, not the first time, then you probably don't need condoms NOR Truvada....  Ask an infectious disease specialist about this.  Couples are conceiving children the natural way...  You could always continue to use condoms, and just go without them when you might want to get pregnant.

And, yes, of course, Truvada / PrEP is an option...   I wonder though, if your BF is, eventually, undetectable for a long time, I wonder if a doc will prescribe PrEP at that point. You might have to doctor shop.

If you ask for PrEP now, before he is on treatment, I would guess they would have to prescribe it for you, and willingly.

Thank you Mecch..he is going back to the doctor in July to get his viral load and cd4 tested again so then they can start him on the appropriate medicine.

Suggest he join this forum.  His viral load is really really low. If it stays like that he might not opt for treatment for some time...
