Byproducts from bacteria awaken HIV in dormant T-cells

Summary:
Dental and medical researchers have discovered that byproducts of bacteria in gum disease, called metabolic small chain fatty acid, can work together to wake up HIV in dormant T-cells and cause the virus to replicate. Their findings help explain why people with the HIV -infections and periodontal disease have higher levels of the virus in their saliva than HIV patients with healthy gums.

Was just pondering this and I'm not sure if I am reading it right because I thought I heard that HIV could NOT live in an infected person's saliva but this, I think, says so otherwise.  The article mentions that HIV+ people that have periodontal disease have a higher level of HIV in their saliva.  So then there remains a low level in the saliva I'm assuming.  But studies say it can't be caught from kissing, I would assume they included open mouth tongue to tongue kissing, and if I recall correctly it is unlikely to be passed if the HIV infected individual is orally giving stimulation.

It's easy to forget there is a difference when they are talking about subjects in these studies.  On meds VS not on meds as in the case of Elite Controllers.  I would say Elite Controllers are more of a danger to others, to transfer the disease but I could be wrong.

stay healthy my friends

You can isolate stands and traces of HIV in sweat and tears and saliva but not in sufficient amounts to transmit HIV . You have been posting up storm in the research forum, that’s pretty heavy reading.

Do you care to share your latest labs with us ? Last I remember you promised us an update.

I did a post in my 'First Post' thread in 'I Just tested positive' about my labs.  Hmm.  Did you mean updating the lumps under my armpits thread in Living with HIV?  I asked my doc about it and he said he'd speak with a technician about what could be best.  He initially suggested either an Ultrasound, or an X-ray/CT scan but warned me that the X-ray/CT scan comes with the risk of radiation exposure.  I asked about an MRI but he said that it would probably be too expensive without insurance and my ins. doesn't kick in until Feb.
