We have collected and reviewed all AMG 2013 Site Location Preferences. We are following the same planning schedule we followed for this year's successful AMG and are right on track with preference selection dates (and actually a few weeks early) and now the official voting for voting for location begins...... I have requested that the MODS lock the AMG 2013 Site Location Preference thread and that they sticky this thread.

The top 3 destinations have been chosen and are being put forth for any member interested in attending AMG 2013 to vote on. Voting is limited to members only.

Voting will remain open until Friday, November 2, 2012.

Please indicate your preference from the following choices. The number in parentheses indicates the number of times the site was listed as a preference.
Votes are limited to ONE VOTE PER MEMBER and ONE SITE:

1. CHICAGO, IL (13)

2. SAN DIEGO, CALIF (10)

3. SANTA FE, NM (6)

Preferences for time of year favored July or August

Please keep the above information in mind when casting your vote. You may also still indicate time your preference for time of year for AMG 2013 to be held.

Also, try to limit your post to your vote (if you want to put a line or two about why you think it should be held in a certain location from the above selections that is fine - but let's try to keep rationale/reasoning to a minimum and as non-duplicative as possible). Thanks for your participation.

Some FYI's from site preference selection: The topic received over 2,349 views; there were 75 replies; 20 site preferences were given; and there were 63 votes.

San Diego - There's Pride, sailors, a great climate, and kick-ass Mexican food! Plus, there are tons of cheap hotels in great areas. After the heat of DC this past AMG, I'll think long and hard before attending one in a hot area in the summer. Mid-late July - early August works for me.

I think I'll vote with David for San Diego. My first trip to California was the San Francisco AMG, and what a great time that was! I am sure I will enjoy the trip wherever we go! July or August will work for me as well.

This is a tough one. San Diego has the zoo and La Jolla, the Midway aircraft carrier and a harbor cruise. I'm sure it would be lovely to walk around. Chicago has the Sear Tower (now the Willis), the Field Museum and the Chicago Institute of Art, Lake Michigan shore and probably that "city feel" - restaurants, lots of people, big buildings and bright lights. For those of us who remember the fun we had at Fenway, there's the Chicago Cubs and White Sox and San Diego's Padres. I feel San Diego would have a nice climate and and a laid back ambiance and Chicago might be more culturally exciting. Chicago is also 2200 miles closer to me than San Diego. I could make it a driving vacation. OK, I'll stop thinking aloud and shut up.

Both San Diego and Chicago are good choices. It is a tough decision.

Regarding distance, it is slightly farther to Chicago, but it is a train hub and easily accessible by rail.

I think I could get to San Diego by train too, but not too sure.

After confering with friends who have been to both places, I think I will cast my vote for:

Chicago.

Edited to add, anytime except the first week of August.

Chicago...

San Diego is a lovely city. I visited four or five times when I lived in LA back in the early '80's as I had friends from NY living there. I would love to visit San Juan and especially Santa Fe and the southwest. But Chicago is a great location, relatively shorter travel for most folks and a town with a lot to offer. My vote: Chicago (July or August- excluding the week Mark said he cannot attend).

San Diego.

It's supposedly gorgeous year round, so anytime. Chicago is awesome, but I have been there AND San Diego has my ultra-fabulous lesbian friend, Lynn, from high school. She just came to GA this summer, but I wasn't able to get up with her then. Would love to get out her way.

I'm hoping it's Chicago since I'm not sure I can afford going all the way to San Diego because I've been off work and my vacation fund isn't that impressive right now. But I don't want to sway the voters.

Plus, it'll be the first one I can drive to and bring all the luggage I desire and need.

I have never attended an AMG but from what I have read already thru the post it sounds like fun. I would like to be among folks like me who enjoy life tot the fullest no matter what kind of day you have. Nothing like changing the rules in mid-stream, but why not look at both cities: Chicago and San Diego. See what dates are available for each as well as accommodations. Then present this is a final choice for selection. We could use this process to winnow the choice to two cities. We can use this in years when it is very close and some other factors (dates, cost of lodging) could sway the preference.

Just a thought.

For the record, I would be satisfied with either location. I share the concern about lodging in Chicago...but we have taken our school kids there several times and found affordable lodging during the week in the city. Summer may be different of course.

We attended a family wedding in Chicago not too long along and we booked an entire block of rooms as we have family all over the country. We had beautiful accommodations and the cost was less than we've paid for either of the AMG's I've attended.

Are hotel rates in Chicago higher than DC -- or Boston or San Francisco? That's hard to imagine as DC is a very wealthy area, as are the other cities where AMG was held.

Goodness gracious, I don't even remember the name of the hotel we stayed in this past July. My must fav cousin has worked at the University of Florida for 18 years. She's the Director in Offices of Conferences and Institutes. A large part of her job is making sure accommodations are made for any travel related to the university. She always does the negotiating for our family. When my grandmother died a few years, she managed to book us in the finest motel in Ravenswood, WVA. They wouldn't budge much below their $19.99 a night rate.

I keep nominating Sante Fe each year. One of these times we will get there! it is a wonderful place and quite unlike the other cities we have visited.

I have a soft spot for Burlington, Vermont (home of the original Ben & Jerry's) another wonderful progressive small town.

That said, I will be happy with either Chicago or San Diego...though I still prefer San Diego because of its totally agreeable climate, affordable lodging, and dare I add, In N Out Burgers!

After reading all the positive comments about San Diego, I'm torn. Initially I would have gone for Chicago, no questions asked... but I think I'll stick with Chicago.

I have a feeling I won't be able to afford to travel to the States anyway whether the AMG is held in the midwest or west coast, but just in case I can, Chicago is closer and the airfares are substantially less expensive.

So yeah, Chicago.

Just a quick reminder ... I have lived in both San Diego and Chicago and the hotels are actually about the same . If you choose San Diego the transportation or the cab rides gets awfully expensive and they are hard to find at night . On the other hand , the train in chicago takes you everwhere you want to be very fast and cheap .

I'm thinking with a negotiated group hotel rate things will work out for all if chicago is the destination . I'm serious , getting around chicago is so much easer to do than SD , this alone will more than make up the difference ... if you don't rent a car in SD your fucked .

It's in boystown, in walking distance to all the bars and doings in Lakeview and near the train. It's a Best Western, but it's actually quite nice and each time I've stayed there its been a reasonable rate. It's my favorite hotel in Chicago. The rooms are quite nice too.

I have lived in both citys , I was in SD from 1999 2001 . How often do you walk from downtown to sea world or the wild animal park ? . I lived in Chicago for 13 yrs before SD and never got shot and unlike SD , Chicago has great public transportation .

VOTING FOR AMG 2013 HAS CLOSED

It's official - final voting was completed for AMG 2013 on November 2, 2012:

Per the votes - AMG 2013 will be held in CHICAGO, Illinois

Months preferred for AMG ranged from July through September – with most preferring sometime in August. I will start a new thread for people to suggest dates for AMG 2013 - Let's try to get thoughts on date preferences in and finalized by Friday, November 16th.

Final vote counts for site selection of AMG 2013 were as follows:

CHICAGO = 16
San Diego = 13
Santa Fe = 1

BTW, Chicago was the second place selection for AMG 2012 (with Washington D.C. selected as the official site)

Thanks to all who voted! Watch for more information - finalization of dates, hotel selection, other planning activities to come from the AMG Coordinator and information on donating or requesting assistance to attend to come from Grants Committee.

It's in boystown, in walking distance to all the bars and doings in Lakeview and near the train. It's a Best Western, but it's actually quite nice and each time I've stayed there its been a reasonable rate. It's my favorite hotel in Chicago. The rooms are quite nice too.

This an excellent location . Its just down the street from where I used to live , its close to public transportation , the bars and very good restaurants .

I'm certain it is the same Best Western I stayed at in '98 and '99. It is right around the corner from the Sidetrax bar on North Halstead in Chicago which is probably still showing a video of an aroused Rob Lowe on the screen as we speak. The hotel was clean and comfortable and safe as cities go.

It is within a few blocks walking distance of Wrigley Field which would be fun, since, like Fenway Park it is such a historical park. I saw the Mets and Cubs there both years I went and loved Wrigley.

There are nice restaurants there on North Broadway and the bars are on N. Halstead. It is a block or so away from Lake Shore Drive and there is an underpass to the very pretty park right on Lake Michigan.

It is about a half hour train ride from Wrigley to the Sears Tower or whatever it is called now. I think you take the red line one stop and transfer for the brown line and you are close to the tower. After a brief movie on the history of Chicago, which was a one horse town until trains started rolling and it became a hub of the midwest and grew out to a very nice city. After coming down from the tower we took a river taxi out to the Navy Pier or Navy Yard and from there a harbor taxi out to the museums, a lovely setting and well worthwhile. The architecture of Chicago's skyline is lovely as the Chicago river snakes right through town. It is well worth it to take one full day doing that I would say.

The weather was fine in '98 but in '99 it did get up to a mere 103 degrees. So we have to go by the adage that we always get great weather, only Washington might just have been a tad humid, who knew?, but I enjoyed DC as much as any town we have visited and everyone has been great. I think Chicago will work very nicely. San Diego is very pretty and I was last there in 1981 and cities do change (LA now has a metro train) but everything I remember about it was you need a car to get around and that makes logistics difficult for most folks, as we often take cabs in cities that have trains and buses, but usually at relatively short distances.

Anyway, if the goddesses permit, Chicago 2013 here we come!

As for the hotel costs in SD... look at a post I made a while back; I think it was in the nominating thread. I stayed at a decent hotel for $65 per night with no fees for parking or internet, a hot tub, two pools, recently renovated rooms, a king bed, 'fridge, microwave, etc. I know voting is over, but SD is significantly cheaper than any of the cities we've held AMG's. If things go as I hope, we may actually live in SD or another SoCA location by then!

AMG stands for Aids Meds Gathering. As these forums used to be hosted on a site called aidsmeds, but has since changed to the poz forums. The gathering lasts for a weekend, it is official only in the sense that we members officially organize it every year and all forum members are welcome. There is no website all information about it is listed in the 3 or 4 main threads each year. The site chosen for 2013 was Chicago and we're currently narrowing down what dates. Feel free to go vote in that thread. It will be under the forums gatherings topic.
