What is AMG?
« on: October 14, 2006, 04:06:03 pm »
Can someone give me an idea on what AMG is all about (and what the acronym stands for-- maybe AidsMeds Gathering??) -- or direct me to a thread that explains it?  I know there has been some controversy around this, but I'm not really interested in that -- I would, however, be interested in any gathering where I could meet some of the great folks I see in these forums.

thanks so much,
Mike

Bocker

Your guess was right.  AMG = AIDSMeds Gathering.

We've had three so far.  The first was in Toronto, there was a more regional type one in Nashville, (both of those were in 2005) and the most recent was in Montreal.

I wish I could direct you to a thread about the Montreal gathering, but the moderators decided to remove the thread with all the great information about AMG 06 (something I personally feel wasn't a good idea!  But what do I know?   ::))

We are currently planning our gathering for next year, titled AMG 07.  We have two threads going until the end of October, where members can suggest locations and dates.  Presumably once those suggestions are made, the co-coordinators (Ric and Emeraldize) will narrow the field down and we'll vote for the site/date in November.

Check out the two threads I mentioned about location/date, and if you've got ideas please post them there.

AMG would not only give you the chance to meet others as you mentioned, it also (or at least for me personally) is the single most fulfilling experience I've had the chance to experience.

Ahem... Rab...

We did NOT remove the 2006 AMG thread. When we unstickied it (which you agreed to), it slipped back into the correct timeline for when it was posted. It's the very first (last) thread in this forum, currently over on page five. You can link to it in one of the current stickies if you like.

There was a fourth one recently in Amsterdam as well.

I'm bumping this thread in the hopes that some of the AMG veterans will come in and say a few words about AMG for the newer people in the forums. I think there was a better thread somewhere (created, again, by someone who wanted to know more) but darned if I can find it. It might be in Off Topic.

Imagine trying to herd cats and coordinate a week long event that brings pozzies from all over the world to one location.  Add to that amazing people, from all walks of life, who come to together to celebrate that it is OK to be poz.  Provide an environment with a little bit of structure and plenty of free time, so everyone can have a chance to form bonds that will last a lifetime.  Populate this environment with members from this forum, some of whom are provided financial grants, from members donations, so that they may attend.

Then sit back and watch day one of AMG unfold, which always begins with the arrival watch at the designated hotel.  Watch members, some of whom have known each other for years, meet each other for the first time and feel the bond.  Feel the power that surrounds members as they are among their own kind and for many, it is for the first time in their life.  Share in the love that flows as we all greet each other, meet new members and start to form the bonds.

Wrap all of this in the tenderness and understanding that exists in our members and you have the ingredients for a life altering event.  Each AMG selects a site and conducts an AIDs Memorial Ceremony that is tragic and depressing and joyful and energizing.  Each year the ceremony is different, but the result remains the same; mourning and healing for those we have lost to HIV.

The week has scheduled events, which are great, but the best part is when you splinter with a group and get to know some new mates.  You will find incredible people amongst us.  There will be those with incredible courage, unwavering support and the group emits a truly positive energy for the duration of the week.  Friends are found, bonds are formed and for many members, it may be one of the first times, that they feel they are truly among family.

You can read the schedule to see what is planned, but the only reason to come is because you cannot afford not to.  Until you meet some of these folks in the flesh, you will have no idea of the beauty that inhabits these forums.  I have met dozens of remarkable people, who are always ready to accept anyone, who feels the need to belong.  That's really what it is all about, belonging.  For many of us, we are the outcasts of society and it's unfair to live life without never feeling that you really belong somewhere.  So come to an AMG and meet the people, you share these boards with and I guarantee, that no matter what the cost, you will leave AMG with friendships and memories for a lifetime.

I'm a newbie and Boston was my first AMG. I can tell you first hand that what Killfoile describes is exactly as it happens. There is no "fluff" in his description. I knew no one attending and I can tell you I was a little apprehensive as I approached the crowd gathered in front of the Hotel as I arrived, but within 5 minutes I felt absolutely at home and among family. It only got better as the days went by. It was a life changing event for me.
If you have never been you should definately try to attend as it is truly amazing.

I would like to second Joe's and Williy's praise of this event.  I was priveleged to be able to attend the Toronto and Montreal events, due to some very generous donations to the grants committee.  I had such a wonderful time meeting these people, and still remember with fondness the times spent together.

I have mobility problems, and due to the stress of the last flight to Montreal, I have sworn off flying anywhere, so I probably won't be attending anymore, unless of course they are within driving distance of my home in Arizona.  This however, is the only reason I have not attended any of the more recent gatherings, but I do very highly recommend that anyone interested and capable, make an AIDS Meds Gathering a life goal, the joy will stay with you forever!

I'm just guessing;  I only met those guys for the first time in Montreal.  I, however, was a perfect little angel on said trip. Except for the attempted-after-hours-beer-buy that has been well-documented in these forums, you'll have to hear the rest in person.

The "official" 2010 AMG is in London this year. Check the stickied threads at the top of this forum.

There is also an "unofficial" AMG in Las Vegas organised by the people who didn't want London  as the official location.

Correction...the Las Vegas gathering is not being "organized by people who didn't want London as the official location." There is a gathering being organised in Las Vegas because the responses from both U.S. members and European members at the time of the destination vote showed there was more than enough interest to warrant multiple gatherings. It has been made clear by members on both sides of the pond that traveling oversees was not cost effective at this time.

So yes, the official AMG 2010 is in London. However, if you're unable to make it to London, there will be a gathering in Las Vegas.

Dennis, whatever. The fact remains that London is the destination of the Official 2010 AMG.

Um...Have I ever disputed this? If I have, please point me in that direction. In fact, I mentioned London is the "official" AMG in my post above, in the Las Vegas gathering information thread, and in numerous private messages I have received regarding AMG.

If you are going to answer members questions and state facts about AMG and any other gathering that is being planned by those other than yourself then I ask that you please state those facts correctly.

I have done absolutely nothing in these forums to diminish the fact that London is the "official" AMG. In fact, I have stayed pretty low until the London organizers and those attending could get things rolling.

So don't "whatever" me, Ann.
