Mortality rates for HIV infected

I read a comment from one of the most prominent ID doctors in my country and for the last years the overall mortality rate for the HIV infected population has been steady at around 1%.

The HIV population itself is rather small,around 5000 ppl with 200-400 new infections registered annually. My country is in west Europe and has socialized healthcare.

Statistics shows around 10,5 deaths per 1000 for the general population. Making the mortality rate for the HIV group pretty much the same.

I couldnt find info on age or specific causes of death but I have sent him an email to ask for more detailed info.

I read something last week about the statistics for HIV deaths in 2011 all around the world, don't remember where.

The massive majority of those, no surprise there, comes from African countries. From what I read, deaths in Europe and USA have remained steady and I think it might be a result of those who get tested when its already too late.
