Worried about fingering incident
« on: January 20, 2021, 08:48:49 am »
Hi!

I am worried about a recent encounter I had. I met up with a guy who had recently just had sex with other men and had semen from them still in his anus, probably about a half hour before I arrived.

WHen I arrived, I fingered his anus for about 2 minutes using two fingers, which I assumed was a safe activity. I felt some of the semen in his anus and didn't think much of it.

When I left, I noticed that one of my fingers had a small cut near the nailbed. Very tiny, with some skin hanging off, but still an open cut. It is very small, but I put alcohol on it to see if it would sting and it did, meaning the cut had access to the layer of skin beneath the top layer. It was not bleeding or anything, but now I am afraid that some of the semen that was in his anus may have got into my cut and possibly infected me with HIV. I know fingering is a no risk situation even with cuts, but I wanted to double check on this unique scenario.

What you posted is not an HIV risk to you.

Here's what you need to know to avoid HIV infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about PrEP as an additional layer of HIV protection going forward.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

Kind regards

Jim

Thank you for the reply!

Are you sure? I am worried because I know HIV is rendered useless when exposed to air, but this semen was never exposed to air as the men finished inside of his anus. There was the semen of at least a few men in there, and it had happened recently before I arrived. This makes me believe that there may have been active HIV in the semen in his anus that then could have possibly made its way into the small cut on my finger. Is this just not possible, even if the cut was open? Again, not bleeding, pretty sure it is a “superficial” cut, but it did sting when I put alcohol on it, meaning that it was open, though not bleeding.

Regarding the fingering, there has never been a documented case of HIV transmission via fingering, despite scrapes, small wounds, cuts, bumps etc and you will not be the worlds first. It's not a route.

I'll add your situation is not unique or rare, plenty of times blood or other fluids containing HIV are encountered during fingering. So the sperm in the ass 30 mins beforehand does not change anything.

Stop stressing about never before happened non-existing risks. Keep focusing on real HIV risks, reducing those risks by using condoms and PrEP and testing at least yearly out of standard routine for STI's.

Okay, thank you.

To be clear, the semen was still in his anus when I fingered  it with my finger that had a cut, and it touched the finger. Even if the semen did contain HIV, it’s not a risk?
