Any risk ?
« on: November 22, 2023, 11:13:11 am »
Hi all,

Would someone mind giving me a bit of help and  asses my risk, if any.

Gave an unprotected blow job to a random guy earlier this year. Understood the risks and testing and got tested after 3 months just to put my mind at ease, negative, all good, moved on with life.

Fast forward a few months and i've started dating and it's now turned into a serious relationship. At this point my mind is spinning about how accurate was the previous negative test I had, was it a false negative, did they mix up the results ect..

So off I go to get a another test, decided on the rapid test and blood from the vain overall sexual heath test. The nurse didn't seem to impressed I was getting both, a waste of time perhaps. I'd worked my self up so much about the test I paid very little attention to what the nurse was doing. Both come back negative, all good move on with my life.

5 days after I get a blocked nose and mouth ulsers now two weeks after the test I've got a sore throat. So now I'm thinking could there be a risk when I was taking the test. I can't be 100% sure that the needle from the instant test was from the bag containing the test and what if it was reused from the last person testing - appointments are fairly close so would have been a about 10 mins if reused - what are the risks here ?

The blood from the vain I can sort of remember, the tube was clean / empty prior to it being used. This one was a needle connected to a tube and then collected in a small test tube thing. I remember after my test the bloody being held in tube between the needle and the test tube, which the nurse urgently disposed of. So I can imagine it would be hard to unknowingly re-use one of these - what are the risk here ?

Should I test again or can I just move on with my life. Obviously don't want to put my new partner at risk, if any. And I can imagine the relationship with turn comdomless fairly soon.

I think I'm being overly concerned and worried for no reason but would be good to hear you thoughts.

Hiya,

You gave a blowjob, so there was no reason for HIV screening outside of the standard yearly routine, and you did so anyway. The result was non-reactive, as expected. However, you have now ended up on the merry-go-round of pointless testing for no reason, doubting the results and thinking the clinic may have given you HIV during testing.

So let's keep this short, you did not acquire HIV from giving the blowjob, neither did you contract HIV from getting a blood draw. I wish you well but if you can't move on with your life, then instead of continuing to test or stress about this,  I would recommend talking to a therapist before things get worse.

Congrats on the relationship, i'll mention the same thing I always do when someone says they are in a relationship: If you engage in condomless sex with your partner, you are obviously at risk of acquiring HIV. In relationships, condomless sex is often based on trust or past test results; however, this does not prevent HIV, so if condomless sex does occur, you should consider testing more frequently.

Here's what you need to know to reduce your HIV risks:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse correctly and consistently, with no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about PrEP as an additional layer of protection against HIV

Keep in mind that some sexual practices described as safe in terms of acquiring HIV still pose a risk for other easier-acquired STIs. So please do get tested at least yearly for STIs, including but not limited to HIV, and more frequently if condomless intercourse occurs.

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms; testing is the only way to know.

Kind regards

Jim
