Title: My Atripla Diary
Post by: northernguy on February 22, 2010, 09:42:44 pm
Indulge me, I'm recording it as much for my benefit as for those who may follow.  ;)

- After 2 days, I felt no major sides, doc seemed a bit surprised.
- After 5 days: uh oh.  Here come the sides: hard time getting to sleep, felt very hot.  Woke up a couple times during the night.  After the alarm rang I lay in bed for 30 minutes then got up, feeling as though I hadn't slept a wink.  Nice morning wood though.

More to come...

ahhh yes, the Atripla Woody! I miss it so.

My Testosterone replacement doesnt even give me the morning wood that Atripla did.

I look forward to reading your diary, especially when the bizarre dreams start rolling in ( I miss those also).

Hey buddy,

I am not on Atripla but from what we can read it's a rather forgiving drug to take (guess you don't need me to tell you that). The sleeping problem is likely caused by the Sustiva component and in my case I am still having occasional problems with my sleep pattern after a year. So it may take a while to adjust.

Well, wish you the best, and from your accounts of the "morning wood" it's not all bad.. ;)

Hugs, Shaun

Hopefully, once you're able to get some sleep, you'll have some funky dreams to share with us.

Oh yeah, the vivid dreams are now here.  Ask me how I stowed away on a Dash-8 turboprop flight from Vancouver to Australia last night!  ;D

Woke up at 5 am again sweating like crazy.  Also my lips and hands tingled for the first couple hours I was awake. ???

9 nights later..still having trouble sleeping, but nothing major.  Looks like I might have a bit of rash on my back but again, nothing major.

I had kind of hoped to see some improvement in my red, flaking skin, but nothing yet.  I suppose its early days.  On the plus side, no real GI issues.

Sorry to hear that you're having some problems sleeping but at least it's nothing too major.  In the meanime, I hope you're enjoying the Olympics.  You Canadians started off a bit slow, but you sure have picked up steam in recent days!  I guess you must have found that the presence of the Olympics in Vancouver didn't cause TOO much gridlock and confusion downtown.

Actually the Olympics helped and hurt. I had one appointment with my doc, his office is very near a station downtown.  When I went to board, the train was so jammed I turned around and got a cab, there were virtually no cars downtown.

On the plus side, the hospital pharmacy where we get the meds dispensed had given their clients all additional amounts so they wouldn't have to come in during the Olympics.  As a result there was absolutely nobody else waiting when I went!

Going for my firsts set of labs after starting Atripla tomorrow.  Doc says these are more to ensure kidneys, liver etc aren't reacting badly to it.  Vivid dreams are really vivid as much as intense, and worse when I eat too close to the meds.  One weird thing, my hair (facial and on scalp) feels softer?  ???

Started Atripla in July 2009.  Some side effects at the beginning.  But now everything is okay.  It is a friendly drug. Sleep well.  Eat well.  But I think I got high cholesterol since I began this drug.  I some times miss my drug due to forgetfulness.  I have doc appointment today March 10, 2010.  My last CD was 300. That was in October 2009.  I don't know how much it would be.  I am curious to know it.   ;D

Been on Atripla now for three weeks and have had practically no side effects beyond a little dizziness in the morning. Interesting that you also experience the morning wood :) I am 54, fit for my age and never had problems with wood but now I wake up with rock solid wood like a 19 year old - even in the middle of the night! - and my libido rocketed in the first week. Anyone else experiencing this?

There have been a few threads in which people have mentioned they get more sexual on Atripla, links below.

So a month or so into it, I notice my bowels are getting a little "looser".  There hasn't been a dietary change, so I assume its the Atripla.  Is that common?

I also had my first alcohol last night since going on meds, a cocktail and glass of wine with dinner.  Felt like a truck hit me this morning!

Make sure you get plenty of soluble fibre (i.e., oats, juices and root vegetables) in your diet to act as a binding agent.

Where have I said anything about not taking it on an empty stomach? Maybe your HIV dementia is getting the better of you, Rod .. or maybe you just need to slow down a little in your desperation to pick holes.

Increasing your intake of foods that contain soluble fibre can help since they absorb water and expand, binding together the intestinal contents.  http://www.catie.ca/SideEffects_e.nsf/toc/961D4AA6D6FF264C85256C7C00654945?OpenDocument (http://www.catie.ca/SideEffects_e.nsf/toc/961D4AA6D6FF264C85256C7C00654945?OpenDocument)

Fruit juices can contribute to diarrhea. Now that doesn't take a rocket scientist.

*yawn*

There is no point in discussing with someone who persistently chooses to ignore scientific evidence, and in so doing relegates his credibility to something less than that of your average Aids denialist.

It is the skins of some fruits (which are rich in insoluble fibre) which cause cause diarrhoea .. not the juice (which is rich in soluble fibre).

Clearly some people aren't the rocket scientists they believe themselves to be.

Rod being the resident expert on posting BS, like "There has never been anyone contract HIV by peircings [sic] or tattooes [sic] (because he is singularly incapable of understanding the critical difference between "never happened" and "never documented").

And here I find another thread being hijacked with an argument between Luke and Rodney. Knock it off, guys.

Rodney, it is a fact that a fiber-rich diet can help with both diarrhea and constipation.

Luke, please don't throw accusations of aids-related dementia around. It isn't nice and it isn't clever and you can state your position without resorting to this kind of tactic.

Please consider yourselves warned, both of you.

And the hijack ends here. Thank you all for your cooperation.

Clear juices, such as apple, peach, or pear avoid any juices that is high in acid. ie orange and grapefruit juices.

Indeed .. but acidic juices from citric fruits should in any case be avoided with most meds, because they have the theoretical ability to interfere adversely with the blood levels of many drugs (not just HIV drugs).

No where did you put what types of juices. Your use of just juices don't get it for those having a problem with diarrhea.

And equally, you dismissed ALL juices and supported that with an article which actively recommends juices to control diarrhoea.

Just face it, Rob, you went looking for a fight and in the process simply proved that you are full of the proverbial shit and don't even have the intelligence to realise it (and if that gets me banned, then I will happily take it and hold it up as an clear example of the unequal treatment that is so prevalent in this cesspit of misinformation where the dementia addled clique are free to abuse, troll and flamebait to their hearts content .. and are actually cheered on in doing so by some of  the hypocritical moderators).

While I don't give a rat's patootie about your mildly entertaining little tiff with Roddles, I do find your constant incorrect accusation of dementia offensive. Highly offensive to those of us that dealt with folks who actually suffered from AIDS related dementia. So, I'm going to report you and hope I'm able to help you hold it up as a clear example of your unequal treatment.

Luke, whatever point you may have had in this conversation has now become totally obscured by your snarky retorts. That stuff is unacceptable here. You've had a Time Out before this so yes, you are at risk for being banned.

Either clean up your conversational act in here or you'll get that ban which you seem to playring around about.

Express what you want to about an issue but make sure it's in a more civilized tone.

Consider yourself warned.

What was the question? Oh yea, I couldn't sleep, had hot flashes and was very frisky when I tried  Atripla. I actually felt like I was on Cocaine! That high was all good back in the 80s when I was in Atlanta partying at Back Streets or Hollywood Hots. But now that I just became a member of AARP, I could not deal and pussed out after only a few weeks on Atripla.

Yeah, I seem to get those Atripla hot flashes when I'm sleeping.  I have also noticed a mild anxiousness, that wasn't there pre-Atripla, but so far I can deal with it.

Still no improvement in my skin, which really bums me out.  As MissP suggested, it may be time to ask my doc what else could be causing the severe flakiness if the HIV isn't.

Did you have the flaky skin pre Atripla? A couple years ago I developed dermatitis on my face that was worse in the winter. My ID Doctor and my Dermatologist both said that it could be from many things (allergies, stress or weather) or it could be the HIV as skin problems are fairly common.
Since I did not stay on Atripla long enough I can't comment on it's effectiveness to relieve it. I can say that a few weeks after I started Isentress & Truvada my face has cleared up. I really don't know if it is the Meds or the fact that I am no longer stressed out because I have taken control of my virus.

Yep, the dermatitis was there pre-Atripla.  Maybe I'm just expecting results on it  too quickly.  Something to add to the laundry list for my next doctors' appt.

It seems that everyone who starts Atripla has a precipitous drop in VL with a rise in CD4.  Has anyone who reads this had a negative experience?  I wonder why most Poz people are not on this drug?

Hi most pos people in the western world are on this treatment its the reccommended first line in most modern countries. Also becoming popular is isentress with truvada which has similar results with less side effects but it is taken twice a day against atripla once a day. Some people cant take atripla due to certain side effects to do mainly with deppresion i believe or they have resistance to it for various reasons.

As Tommy mentions, most poz people in the developed world are on this drug, mainly because of it's once a day, one pill dosing.

As far as anyone having negative experiences with Atripla, some people do have issues. If you search on here for "Atripla side effects" or just "Atripla" you'll see lots of threads discussing this. Keep in mind this is skewed since most people who are on Atripla with no issues are not likely to come and post on here.

The bottom line is all of the current first-line recommendations work great at suppressing the virus and rebuilding the immune system and they each have their pros and cons:

Not much to contribute, having just started 3 days ago...but I Did have a Very hallucinogenic/trippy dream the first night....it involved Michael Cade!  Yum!  I woke up and still felt drugged/like I was tripping.
I thought it might have been because I am also on Bactrum and an antibiotic, so stopped both of those, and no dreams the last two nights.
I don't like medication, unless it is Absolutely necessary, and feel there was a bad conflict there.
As for morning wood....wouldn't matter if I did, living alone!
If I lose hair...I will be Really pissed, as it is already thin and Rogaine is not doing much!
At least I live....if this is living!
