Stephen Fry: HIV and Me - Episode 2
« on: October 09, 2007, 02:30:29 pm »
Second episode is being shown tonight.  I can upload it again if anyone can host it this time, philly has gone over his download limit I think so he can't do it this time.  Heres the description of tonights episode might be of more interest to us lot this one:

Quote
In part two of this powerful and timely documentary series looking at HIV and AIDS, Stephen Fry explores what life is like living with the virus today and the impact treatment has had.

Twenty years ago there was no medication. Becoming infected meant almost certain death. But this year a drugs company has produced the long awaited breakthrough of controlling HIV with one pill a day. Stephen wants to find out if that explains why HIV has slipped off the radar despite the fact that there are three times as many sufferers in Britain today as 10 years ago.

Stephen begins his journey meeting people whose lives have literally been saved by the drugs. He meets a 21 year old girl born positive who has now given birth to a baby born negative.

But Stephen also discovers that taking the medication often leads to terrible side effects and that thousands of patients now find themselves resistant to the drugs. In the case of one man in Los Angeles resistant to all 24 drugs, a 'salvage' patient who fears he is about to die.

But at least in the UK there are drugs. Most HIV patients around the world can only dream of such a situation. Stephen goes to Uganda to explore why the drugs don't seem to be getting through. The answer is unexpected and depressing. Some strong language.

I like the fact he seems to be covering the medication side effects and resistance.

Yes.  Was good.  Very good actually.  But honestly, it made me a bit sad.  Sometimes I just like having my head in the sand.  Getting a dose of reality can be overwhelming at times, but beneficial...even if it doesn't feel that way.

I enjoyed tonight's program, especially as it concentrated more on living with HIV.

Very informative and up to date, really accurate portrayal of what it is like living with the virus today.

Just a  thought, I wonder what it will be like to watch that documentary say 10 years from now?, I wonder what changes we will see by then, less stigma?,  resistance busting drugs ?  who knows, but I do know if a similar documentary was made 10 years ago the story would have been a whole lot different.

Powerful is the right word to describe that.  I thought it was excellent if not a little sad and hard to watch in parts.  I'm glad Stephen Fry devoted such a big part to stigma thats really what I wanted to see.  He realised while making the programme just how prominent it still is.  I think he actually said at one point we've gone forward in medical terms but backward in psychological. Anyway i've got a job interview tomorrow morning so I'm going to bed I'll add some more tomorrow.

I agree, very good and very powerful. Just like the first one, I felt it was quite emotionally draining to watch. It had me in tears quite often. In a good way and very much testimony to how important these two programmes are.

I was glad he focused on the stigma and just how crippling it is. It also made it dawn on me how much more intensely the stigma seem to be experienced by straight pozzies compared to the reality urban gay men typically face.

These are links to parts of last week episode. I am trying to locate an online file now of the second episode. You can also watch the first episode in 4 parts online in this online video stie:

Part 1: http://www.veoh.com/videos/v1263202EHwcRy7Q

Part 2: http://www.veoh.com/videos/v12633527szwnpy8

Part 3: http://www.veoh.com/videos/v1263391zZR5p55W

Part 4: http://www.veoh.com/videos/v1263433fswCD6q7

Veoh offers sightly better quality than youtube for people with fast connection; you can also download the files in divx format.

Shaun

PS - Chris/Manchesteruk, I sent you a PM about using my mac.com account. Please let me know what works and once I have a file I will upload them in veoh like I did.

Yes, I think my concern with my .mac account was overkill once I researched it.  Plus I don't think that many people downloaded it, so I'm more than happy to host the 2nd part once again Chris... whatever, or Shaun can do it.

I'd just prefer having both parts in wide screen .avi format in case I ever want to burn it to a disc to give to someone else later.

I downloaded it on two different computers (home and work) and tried to play it on four.  It only played sound, with no video.  It was very strange and I'm not sure what could have caused it, but thanks anyway!

Hi Philly

I don't think I have enough bandwidth to allow the same kind of file sharing with my .mac account. If Chris uploads it to you I can then downlaod it from you (or Chris can upload to mind to), then I post it on veoh.com so everyone can watch.

And I DID say thanks!

There's a 100 GB limit per month, but you may use half of your allotted bandwidth every two weeks.

Quote
How do I know if I'm approaching my bandwidth limit?

You will receive a warning email when you have used 75% of your allotted bandwidth, another email when you have used 90% of your allotted bandwidth, and yet another email when you have used 100% of your allotted bandwidth.

When you exceed your allotted bandwidth, your site will be blocked. You will still be able to view your own site, publish updates with iWeb, and access other .Mac services, but other people will not be able to visit your site until your data transfer rate is reset to zero, which happens every two weeks.

How do I avoid going over my bandwidth limit?

Here are some ways to avoid exceeding your bandwidth limit:

Compress or remove videos and podcasts from your site (and encourage visitors to download your videos or podcasts rather than visit the site repeatedly to view the same content)
Purchase more iDisk space, which increases your allotted bandwidth
Password-protect your Web galleries or pages to limit page views to those who know the password.
You can monitor your data transfer history or buy more bandwidth from the "Account Settings" pane of your .Mac account online:

Go to www.mac.com and log in by clicking the "Log in" text on the far right of the blue bar.
Click on the word "Account" above your member name.
Log in again since you’re entering your personal "Account Settings" pane.
Once you’re in the "Account Settings" pane, look below "Account" to the "Storage" section. On the last line, you can see your "Data Transfer/month" followed by a number in GB.
Click the "Details" link to monitor your monthly usage, or click the "Buy More" button to upgrade your iDisk and data transfer limit.

Mine says: You are currently using 11.36 GB of 50 GB bimonthly data transfer limit, so I'm sort of safe.  Chris can upload it to mine.

How much do you have on yours, Shaun?  Are you sharing fisting porn to all the Sodomites in Shanghai?

Haha... China's state secrets! ;D

I think I can still put it up there for downloading if Chris can upload to my account directly. But I still think the best option is Veoh.com because like youtube folks can watch online and it also allows downloading.

I downloaded it on two different computers (home and work) and tried to play it on four.  It only played sound, with no video.  It was very strange and I'm not sure what could have caused it, but thanks anyway!

Just try installing the Xvid video codec David that should sort it, a quick google search should bring it up.

Mine says: You are currently using 11.36 GB of 50 GB bimonthly data transfer limit, so I'm sort of safe.  Chris can upload it to mine.

Uploading to yours now.

This is a valuable piece of media - I hope that the second part can be posted soon. I have already sent details of this site to our local HIV counselling service and to a couple of local colleges.

Hope to see more soon

Thanks to those who posted the details

Haha... China's state secrets! ;D

I think I can still put it up there for downloading if Chris can upload to my account directly. But I still think the best option is Veoh.com because like youtube folks can watch online and it also allows downloading.

Are you sure?

I had a back up running to my iDisk last night so that might have interfered.  I stopped it this morning as something was fucked up with it, so the disk is inactive now and if you encountered any problems you should not have any if you start now.  Maybe you were waiting until later anyway because I don't see anything in my "public" file at all.

thanks

Hi Philly,

I started it running before I left the house today and it seemed to be uploading ok.  Just got back now and it was asking for a username and password?  So I cancelled it.  I can start it again if you'd like.

No big deal.  I'm downloading the torrent file already, though it's rather slow.

Anyway, I watched both installments of the documentary last night.  Pretty good, actually.

Can't wait until my Brazilian Capoeira porn torrent finishes!

I downloaded all the Capoeira series from gaytorrent... ;D though now I get everything I need through links to rapidshare through a google group.. much much more efficient than BT.

You and I would have such a cat flight over those buffed and juicy Brazilian hunks in Rio Philissa...

Shaun, PM me info on that google group.  However, I know you have to pay monthly for rapidshare as I did it one time.  I'm not big on how they sometime seem to split up videos and then I have to reassemble them, etc.

Oh, and fortunately there is a sizable community of Puerto Rican and Dominicans in Philadelphia, similar to New York.  I can proudly state that I received my copious collection of anal warts from Carlos in a Philly peep show booth in 1997.
