Date of test query
« on: January 06, 2012, 02:39:33 pm »
Hi,

I had unprotected sex with a man on the 13th October 2011 then again on the 3rd November 2011.

Today I had a HIV test (alongside a full STI test).

What is the possibility of getting a false negative for the HIV test? I understand you need to wait 3 months to be absolutely sure of the correct result, however it's been around 2 and a half months since the first time I had sex with him... is there any point of worrying over a false negative seeing as I'm only around 14 days out of the 3 months?

I have had no symptoms of HIV.

Thanks.

Worried, a false negative is unlikely. Getting a negative test result today at 2 months past your most recent unprotected intercourse is excellent. It signals that you are likely going to test negative again for a conclusive result at 3 months.

You do need to learn from this experience. You can have intercourse with anyone regardless of his HIV status. But you need to do it the safer way which means making sure the guy is wearing a condom everytime. No exceptions.

Good luck with your final test.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I feel more reassured! :)

Just one quick question.. would you recommend getting another HIV test when it hits the 3 month mark? Seeing as I only got tested 2 & a half months into the 3 month window. I just don't want to get a negative result even if it is secretly positive.

I don't find the results for another 2 weeks, as they have to send the bloods to the lab to be tested.

Thank you.

Yes, I do recommend that you re-test at 3 months. HIV status is never something to guess about. It seems likely to me that you will test negative again, but don't be in doubt. Re-test and be sure of your status.
