One month after HIV diagnosed
« on: May 15, 2012, 08:04:33 pm »
Good Friday this year, supposed to be a good day,but not for me. I got diagnosed HIV + on that day. I didn't expressing my feeling like i thought. I didn't cry out loud. The only emotion i got was tears rolled down to my cheek. The only question I asked to the person who test me was "How long will I live?". He explained to me a lot that day and asked me to be ready for next step after Hiv test.
A week after that, I withdraw a lot of blood, got a swab in my mouth, a cotton bud inserting to my ass and pee test. I made appointment with my HIV specialist a week later.
I met her for the 1st time and she explained to me that I don't have anything to be worry about. My CD4: 225  VL: 15.000
So far, she gave me Hep A and Pneumonia Vaccine, I will have Hep B and C later. I also got TB PPD test and result is positive (has been exposed) and chest X-Ray result is Negative. I started my prevention TB drugs for 9 months four days ago.
3 days ago, she took my blood again for HIV medicine test. So I will start my HIV medicine at the beginning of June.
I hope whatever medicine I will have don't have effect on my body.
Another question Pop in my mind again now, with this condition now, how long I'm gonna live? I know no human can answer this, but I just hope that I will live longer.

Hi Myoho, welcome to the forums. I'm sorry for your diagnosis, but good thing you found your way here. There's plenty of information here, as well as very wise people.

As for the "how long will you live" question, you know that's impossible to say, since we could get struck by a bus the next day and stuff, but regarding HIV, latest studies have found that our life expectancy is getting pretty close to normal and this should only get better. As long as you take care of yourself, expect reaching old age, just like "normal". And in good health. As you will see, there are people here who are positive for over 20 years (a few almost 30) and they went through a rougher time of the epidemic. So expect an easier ride.

The beginning is always tough, but things will get better for you. You can be sure of that. :)

Thank you LM. Actually this forum was recommended by my Hiv specialist.  My partner got two times test after My test result, and the test were Negative. We've been together for 8 years. I'm glad he doesn't have it. He is supporting me and promise not gonna leave me no matter what.
Is 225 of CD4 bad?

So great your partner is by your side, it's very important to have that kind of support, I'm happy for you. :D

A CD4 of 225 is not great, but it's not terrible either. It means you have to start treatment now, but since you will, your numbers should improve soon. Technically, you don't have AIDS, so that's pretty good, and it's a good thing you found out now before your immune system was seriously compromised.

So far I don't feel sick at all, except skin rash, biopsy said It's a mites bite (I got this during a trip in Colorado).
If I take medication right, is it possible that my HIV turn to AIDS in the future? Can someone with AIDS live as long as HIV positive?

With meds, your immune system will get better, slowly or not, as your viral load goes undetectable. And studies show that someone diagnosed with AIDS may (not will) have a lower life expectancy, because the immune system is slower to recover when it's badly damaged. But it's not your case.

Hi Myoho, sorry you tested positive but glad you found your way here.  :)

When one is diagnosed it's normal to be caught in a whirlwind of your worst imaginable fears. We've all been there, and having been there, I can tell you that they will NOT come true. Although you've been diagnosed with low CD4 levels, since you're gearing up to commence therapy soon, there's no reason for you to think you won't have a long fulfilling and productive life.

HIV is now considered a chronic lifelong illness and after you educate yourself and understand how to live well with HIV (which means availing good medical advice and treatment at your disposal, adherence to meds, monitoring CD4/VL etc), you'll see that life will be more or less the same with an added dimension of managing this infection.

Some days may get difficult but life has difficult days in store for everyone regardless of HIV. Prepare yourself for a long, good life - there's no reason to think otherwise today.

sorry to hear your news, Myoho.
as the other people have said, the panic will go and the pills will work.

it's a time of lots of questions. there are lots of answers here, but no rush to get them all. people keep saying to me that there is time to absorb it all, so relax and just know it will get easier in time.
there is stuff online here and elsewhere for your partner to read too.

good luck!! keep hope as your friend.  8)

Thank you all for replying me. I'm glad to be here too!
Honestly, I've never felt very sick for the past 10 years. I only got flu, cough, fever, headache (each not at the same time) never more than a week. The only thing that made me think to test HIV was my itchy skin rash, last october. It took me to realized for HIV test after 6 months with 2 dermatologist and the rash keep come and go.
Right now, Im having (hopefully right diagnosed) my 3rd dermatologist medication and I explained to her that I have HIV. She give me Ivermectin and Fluocinonide cream.
I feel to get tired and fatigue easily these couple days. I don't know if this is related with my low CD4 (225) or what? Is it normal when someone with HIV feel tired day by day? I have a thought when I start my HIV medicine probably it will go away?

I asked my doctor to same question when I got diagnosed. I wasn't sure how long I had to live. He simply told me to plan for retirement. This really isn't the death sentence that it used to be.. It's more like a chronic illness like diabetes, you just have to keep it under control! Take care of yourself exercise and make sure you eat right. Making sure that you have an ID doctor who you were comfortable talking with is also important. You two are going to be a team basically from now on. I worry more about getting struck by lightning now than about dying from HIV or AIDS. Just hang in there and remember we are all here for each others support. You are going to be okay :)

Myoho, maybe your feeling tired is indeed related to it. If it is, as your immune system recovers with the meds, you will get better, for sure. Many people have reported here feeling better and having more energy after starting treatment. Also, it's hard to say how long you have been infected, since each case is different. Your CD4 is a bit low, but so is your viral load, so I would guess you have been infected for quite some time. Regardless, that's not important, the important thing is that now you know and that now you can take care of it.

sorry to hear your diagnosis,
don't think like "you will die soon." sure you will live a long life as long as you can reach the medicine. but you life (like all of us) is going to be harder indeed. don't feel bad about dying but living a life with a virus in your blood.
also drugs are also getting better (real slowly). and lots of scientists say there will be a cure in next 20 years. (i hope but don't believe..)

so it would be better to get used to idea to live with a long term disease and lifelong drug therapy. if you accept these facts then it is not that hard.

Hi everybody, I have 5 more days to meet my ID for my medication result. (I took blood for drug test 3 weeks ago). When I have prescription, Can I get the HIV drugs on that day or the pharmacy have to order? How long does it take for the drugs to be in my hand?
A week ago, i started to feel fatigue everyday, usually in the morning til 2-3 pm. Is it normal as I haven't taken any medicine yet? or My CD4 is going down? My CD4 was 225, I don't know how much is my CD4 and VL now. Is it possible that CD4 go down fast in a month?
Just want to meet my ID for the medication ASAP
Have a great memorial day weekend all!

I suppose it depends on where you live and how many HIV patients on that particular med the pharmacy has.

Helo all, Yesterday was my 1st day taking my meds. My ID prescribe me Truvada, Norvir and Prezista. I took it at 7 PM. Last night, 3 hours after I took them, I started to feel weird, my head light and uncomfortable. Around 11, I was still outside and tried to sit down in a Pizza shop. Ten minutes after,I felt heavy.  just wanted to lay my head on the table and if I could, Lay down on the floor. I fell asleep after that then my partner called me, he picked me up and we went back home.
It was raining, I feel chilly in my body and just wanted to sleep. I lie down without shower and I feel my body so warm. I slept alright without waking up til morning. My T-shirt collar wet a bit in the morning, but all day I did activities without problem.
Tonight, I took them at the same time, and started to feel the same way as I write this. Not as bad as last night, but I feel light headed, warm body and bitterness in my tongue. I pee every hour too.
Is it normal when you start taking Hiv Medicine? How long it will last like this? Or AM i going to feel this way every night I take these medicine?

Myoyo, generally side effects like that only last a couple of weeks. You just need to be patient.

No, don't ignore it. If you feel only a bit feverish try taking a paracetamol or an aspirin to get some relief.

If the fever isn't gone in 24-36 hours or it gets worse, see a doctor.

The 1st night, it's gone after I woke up (10 hours) and I don;t know about this tonight "fever". So Tylenol, aspirin and pain killer will be fine while taking these HIV combination?

Yup. Any of the common anti-febriles (medicines that reduce fever) are ok. Tylenol, aspirin, ibuprofen and so on.

I don't see where he has an actual fever -- did we receive a temperature reading from an actual thermometer or does he just feel like he has one (and actually does not)?

I dont have thermometer. I dont know how much now, but I'm sure, My body is hot and my hand is cold at the same time. I feel my head heavy and my body weak too, like muscle stiff. Thats why I called this "fever". As I write this, I think I'm going to lay down and sleep. Thank you for replying and Goodnite to you both.

feeling warm doesn't mean you have a fever. feeling cold is more common with fever but you cannot be sure unless you have a thermometer. but if you have weakness and stuff, it is logical to do the symptomatic treatment. and also this might not be a side effect but a usual flu, so it might take few days. don't panic, go to doctor if it gets worse. and i have suggestion: buy a thermometer, it will help you a lot in the future.

Today, my 3rd day of my medicine and no "fever" feeling. I feel ok, but I have some dot spot on my arm, neck and face. They are kinda itchy. Is it what called I.R.I.S?

My IRIS landed me in the hospital with lungs full of fluid.

What you describe sounds a lot like mild side effects which will likely pass within a week or two. Take a Benadryl, and call your doctor if a rash develops.

What you described seems very very mild and will likely pass within a few weeks. Considering how insanely powerful the drugs are, you are getting a golden ticket.

Myoho,

I am 5 weeks into the same med therapy as you are taking. However, I was feeling fatigued and light headed for about 2 weeks before I started my meds. I had a lower CD4 count. It was 83. Two weeks after taking the meds, my CD4 count was up to 215. My viral load went from 353,000 to 4,970.
Now 5 weeks into the meds, I feel more energy than I have felt in a long time, my appetite is back and I am enjoying life...

I haven't had sex since I got my HIV result. I'm in medication entering 2nd week this friday. Last time I masturbate was 1 week ago. This morning, I masturbate and surprised with my sperm.
It mix with chocolate color and when I wiped it, actually it looks like blood. Has anyone know what is this? should I be worry and contact to my doctor? or this is one of the HIV drugs effect?

chocolate color? there are few things can paint sperm.

first, it could be blood. means you have to go see a urologist. worst case a testiculer tumor but i think it is unlikely.

second, if you use any other drug, other than hiv meds may cause this. rifampisin can paint your body fluids orange/brown. i think it is the only one. but i haven't heard any hiv meds turn your sperm brown?

so i think if it happens again, go to doctor. i might be a little bit worry if i were you.

I talked with my doctor and she said watch for this. If this is still happening for 10 days, then she will check me. This afternoon, I masturbate and seems the chocolate and blood is no more. I saw normal color. Let's see the next masturbation and what is gonna look like. Hope there is nothing bad about this. Finger cross.

How long you will live is up to you and to the Grace of God.

Always remember that your health, from body to mind, is your number one priority.

Always remember to be on your team; for if you are not, how do you expect anyone else to be?

Take each step one day at a time, one step at a time.

Don't give in to the stress. From now on, each day is a battle.

The world of Google presents this from the Mayo Clinic:

Semen color and consistency can vary based on factors such as age, diet and frequency of ejaculation. However, yellowish-green semen may indicate a prostate infection. Semen is normally a whitish, cloudy fluid. It's usually quite thick just after ejaculation but liquefies about 20 to 30 minutes later.

Changes in the appearance of semen are usually temporary and not a health concern. However, sometimes these changes can be a sign of an underlying medical condition that requires further evaluation. If these changes persist for longer than three to four weeks, see your doctor for an evaluation.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."
