Oral sex and gum disease
« on: May 03, 2012, 05:49:04 pm »
Hello all! A couple days ago, my boyfriend tested positive for HIV. Thankfully we had not performed unsafe anal sex. However, i did perform oral sex on him several times, with him ejaculating in my mouth at least once. From the research i have done online, and other questions asked on this forum it seems pretty conclusive that there is an extremely low risk of contracting HIV from oral sex. My question is, how increased would my likelihood of possibly being infected be if i have gum disease? While i do not know the extent of it, i do know that my gums are not the healthiest, and do bleed sometimes when i brush my teeth. Should i be concerned that there is a considerably bigger possibility that i could be positive due to this fact? Either way i will be testing in 3 months or so to be sure, but i would really appreciate any insight on this topic. I am also trying to be there as much as possible for my boyfriend, and one of his main concerns is that he may have infected me, so i'd love to be able to share some factual information with him regarding the chances. Thank you!!

You never had an HIV exposure from oral sex. Use condoms correctly and consistently for anal and vaginal penetrative sex and don't syringes and needles if you are an IV drug abuser and you won't have an HIV concern.

Thank you for your reply :)

So the fact that i may have had gum disease at the time does not change that fact?

What you are describing as "gum disease" is not the extreme kind of condition which would have to be happening to constitute a real risk for HIV transmission orally. It is something that sounds like a visit to your dentist might be in order to address the matter.

Otherwise your saliva contains over a dozen elements and proteins which form a very effective barrier against the transmission of viable HIV.

It's good that you and your guy are talking about what you need to do to protect your negative status. Open conversation is a good way to maintain intimacy in your relationship.

Ok thank you :)

My boyfriend has a doctors appointment on Tuesday, and i am going with him. I want to be as informed as possible for when i go. Just out of curiosity, do you think the doctor will know this information that you guys are sharing with me? Or will he give me contradictory information? I know the CDC gives what seems to be incorrect information from what i have read on this forum, but i was wondering if most doctors that deal with HIV in the real world are educated and informed enough to give the type of info you guys are giving? Or will they hold the CDC line? Or does it just depend on the doctor?

We don't speculate on what your bf's doctor may or may not know.

We are only responsible for our own responses as we evaluate each person's situation individually.

I do think it can be helpful for you to establish a relationship with your bf's doctor as an opportunity to clarify any concerns you may have.

Ok :) Then without speculating about his specific doctor, would you say doctors dealing with HIV patients generally tend to be aware of the statistics and information you guys here are talking about?

Dowell,

So are, some aren't. How long is a piece of string?

I've known some hiv health care professionals who are very good, honest and knowledgeable, but I've also met more than I care to think about who use the same scare-mongering tactics as the CDC. It's anyone's guess what your bf's doctor will be like. Hopefully he's a good-un.

Provided you haven't been having unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse (with anyone since your last conclusive negative test), I expect you to test negative.

Good luck to the both of you going forward.

Thanks :) Is there any resource you'd recommend to find a good doctor that really knows what they are talking about in regards to HIV?

We do not make referrals here.

Getting a referral from someone who likes their doctor is a good source. Otherwise you might try your local AIDS service organization(s) for recommendations.

Yes, analingus (rimming) is not a risk for HIV transmission.

Ok thank you :)

Would you guys recommend i get tested for HIV after the 3 month period is over based on my activities? Or no point? I was tested prior to this relationship so it would be based specifically on my sexual contact with him.

Just wanted to let you guys know that i took a free HIV test today, and as you guys expected, it came out negative :)

This is around the 7 week point from the last time i performed oral on my bf. I know the 3 month mark is the standard, and i will take another free test at that point to be totally sure, but i was wondering what level of accuracy exists at 7 weeks? Thanks!

A negative result at 7 weeks is very unlikely to be other than negative again at 3 months. Particularly in your case given that giving oral is only a theoretical risk.

I expect you to come out of this ok.
