Drink & Drug
« on: December 12, 2006, 10:49:45 am »
As you may know, Santa is coming to town within weeks & we just got a few bottles of champagne yesterday.  I have every intention to drink my share & celebrate it with my family.

My friend says I should not drink @ all, even if i wasn't on medication.  I'm sure he's right but he has a relatively boring but sober life.  Not very interesting.  I drink a bottle of beer like once a mth in the afternoon, between my morning/evening medication.

My question is: what's a 'safe' time gap?  Is 2 hrs good enough?  I don't drink much anyway, a glass or two @ most, never to unconsciousness like i used to.  What's your advice?
And so it has been, and so it is written

Nick, I've no idea the answer to your question. But had to say that (in my opinion) do drink up! For starters, it's the holidays and as long as you watch your tolerance (and try to swap out every drink with equal amount of water) I think you'll be fine.

More importantly, as a total wine and food head, I love that you're discussing one of my favorites: champagne. It's one of those drinks that either seems trite (as in old women who order crap bubbly for $7 a bottle at the casinos) or girly (as in, "why don't you just order a cosmo, you homo"). But I absolutely adore good brut or demi-sec champagne that has been bottled and cared for by hand.

One of my favorite things on a warm spring afternoon is to open up the door to our back patio after the lawn's freshly cut and open a bottle of Taittinger vintange with friends and nibble on cheese and fruits.

Hello Nick -

I am not sure I have a perfect answer as I am newly diagnosed and still learning - but since I've thought of asking the same question, I am glad you have asked.  From the little I have learned so far about my HIV/AIDS a couple things I would consider:

What medication are you taking? and what if any side effects do you already experience?  I have read that alcohol can act as a booster to the effect of the medication depending on what it is, so you could see a change in its side effects and general effectiveness.

On the other hand if you stick to only a couple of glasses - I wonder if you'd notice much impact at all.  I have given up my daily glass of wine/beer habit  for 5 months now and usually don't miss it much...but thinking of the great times I had sharing champagne with my family tempts me to indulge as a present to myself :)

Now I hope someone who has a really good answer will post it so we will both know what to expect as we celebrate with the ones we love...which to me is worth some risk.

Good luck and hope you and your family have a great holiday.

This is a question more suited to your doctor or pharmacist if you're on any medications.  Make informed decisions. *  If you're not on any medications, tell your friend to work out his control issues on someone else, and have a few! It's the holidays! yay!

*- some drugs can potentiate (become exponentially powerful) when imbibing alcohol (fyi cholesterol medication can be made 1500 times stronger by drinking grapefruit juice) - make sure to read your prescription labels and consult with your doctor should you have any questions.  Make decisions with your doctor's knowledge - the people on this board are not doctors, please remember that.

there are some hiv drugs that you shouldn't drink on at all and others it doesn't matter. You need to ask you Dr.
I had to go to the emergency room because of drinking on Crixivan at Christmas. This Christmas is my 10th anniversary of that episode and also the 10th year of no alcohol.
I have never understood why anyone would just wanna have one or two drinks.  Guess thats why I can't drink.
I really miss red wine and any drink with vodka. Fukding crixivan.

Nick, if your medications need you to not drink alcohol, the pharmacy label will say so.  And, as noted, there will be warnings in the inserts with your medications.  If we are talking about champagne, wine, drinks with a low alchohol level, and we are talking about two drinks and no driving, you should be fine as long as there are no warnings.  I would suggest to anyone reading this thread that he/she 'listen' to her/his liver which has to process things, the alchohol and the medications.  The few times that I tried gin with them, I felt it, like having eaten something that was bad: a pain.  We all need to take care of organs like the liver because we all need them in place to allow the drugs to work.  Win

No warnings on my meds, I am turvada and reyetaz which is boosted with a norvir.  I love a good cold beer in fact, have one almost every night with dinner which also happens to be when I take my meds.   My meds work great, my doc says to keep it under three servings per day to keep my liver OK and I should have no problems.
The difference between an overnight and a layover is luck!

There is no significant interation between any HIV meds n alcohol in terms of effectiveness.  Man, I have been known to nock mine back with a glass of wine after dinner (Reyataze etc).  Well known worseness re: nausea, gut etc, + extra "head" effects for Sustiva, but otherwise unimportant.

Hmmm, well back in the day I use to drink quite a bit but just got tired of drinking so I stopped. Every now and then I will crave a beer but prefers Arbor Mist now. Being diabetic has also kept me from enjoying that much because it raises my sugar. But I think I will skip drinking on Xmas and wait for New Years Eve and my bday. But for those of you who have gotten to know me knows I love my bud!!! So, while y'all are your drink on, I'll be getting my smoke on...Party On!!!!!

Wine and, of course, champagne are good against cholesterol if taken in moderation. One or two glasses a day is good. Dont drink all the bottles yourself on the same day and you will be fine.

Thank you for your kind responses; i guess it's relatively safe taking both drinks & drugs on the same evening.  After all, i have no intention getting drunk & I ain't gonna swallow my pills with spirit.  I already made one mistake too many in my life, so i just want a 2nd opinion on this.  Thanks.

I wish you all a Merry X'mas, have a jolly evening with your loved one.
