Sex with HIV+ top, condom broke, and he came
« on: March 29, 2014, 11:22:22 am »
Howdy all,

So I recently had intercourse with a man that stated that he was HIV+. We used protection but he ended up ejaculating inside me due to the fact that the condom broke. I had not realized this until after he left since I saw the condom in the toilet. I picked it up and noticed a great big gaping hole on the top. I then slowly scooped inside my anus and found some semen coming out with a bit of blood as well... This man was being sketchy from the get go since he brought the condom and he kept on touching it and adjusting every now and then. I feel as though he ripped the condom on purpose and it just upsets me to even think about how anyone would do that. I quickly went to the ER and got a prescription for ATRIPLA and went to the nearest walgreens to pick it up. They didnt have it until the next morning so I took the ATRIPLA 17 hours post exposure. My questions are as follows:

1) How effective will Atripla (PEP) be in preventing me from attaining HIV? Have any of the moderators heard of any stories like mine concerning my risk and using PEP right after? Was the treatment a success for them?
2)As far as testing goes, I know that I must test 6 weeks after my last PEP treatments and then 3 months after for the conclusive results, right?

Thank you for all your help and I will keep everyone posted of what my 6 week results come out as and then a 3 month test as well.

Pep is very effective if taken within 72 hours of exposure so you should expect a negative test for HIV . I have not seen a person who took pep go on to test poz , be sure to take all you doses and expect the best .

You are right ! . I think you will come out of this OK .

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv. Some of the other STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Thank you for replying so quick Jeff. Thanks for the kind words as you can tell that this is a very worrisome process.

Since you said that I should expect a negative test for HIV, have there been multiple cases like mine where the top was definitely HIV+ and came inside the bottom but the bottom ended up HIV- from taking PEP on time? I am obviously still freaking out and would like to hear firsthand from some of the moderators here. I also didnt even scoop out or clean out my anus after he left because I quickly went online to look for a number to the ER in order to figure out what else to do. My risk exposure was definitely high and having not cleaned out my anus probably increased it as well? :( I am so upset and I am trying my best to cope with this but I just feel so powerless and depressed just thinking back to that day. I just need reassurance that there have been people out there that have been in the same situation that made it out HIV-
As far as the PEP, I have not had any horrible symptoms. I take one pill of ATRIPLA every day and the only side effect is that I am extremely sleepy and feel tired/weak. I usually need to take a nap right after and my appetite has been drastically suppressed. Thats all that I have witnessed so far and hopefully these remaining 23 days go by extremely quick. Thank you for everything, you all are such a blessing to have here!

Zoe,

It's a good thing that you didn't go "scooping" or "cleaning" after this happened as any trauma you may have inadvertently caused would only increase your risk. Douching would also have been a bad idea.

You don't seem to know if this guy is on hiv meds or not, but if he is and has an undetectable viral load, this will substantially decrease your risk. Add in you being on PEP and it's as close to 100% as possible in medical science (there is no 100% in medical science) that you will come out of this hiv negative.

Even if he isn't on meds, I fully expect you to eventually test hiv negative provided you stay on PEP. I've yet to see a person taking PEP for a sexual risk (a real risk such as yours) end up testing poz in the 13+ years I've been on this forum.

Just keep taking your Atripla every day.

I hope you were told that you should not eat two hours before or after your Atripla - ideally you should take it right before you go to bed. Eating does NOT affect its efficacy, but taking Atripla too close to a meal, particularly a high-fat meal, will more likely than not increase your side effects.

Any side effects you may experience while on Atripla as PEP will not affect you in the long-term. They'll cease when you stop taking it, so if you do have sides, tough it out for the 28 days. You'll be ok when this is all over.

Please be aware that you only have one free post left, so use it wisely.

Hello everyone!

Well I recently took my 6 weeks HIV test post PEP and it came back NEGATIVE! :) I am so happy with these results! I have heard that a negative during this time frame almost always stays negative at 3 months. Lets hope for the best whenever I test for my 3 months test! Thanks for all the help guys! As well, if I dont reply back, its probably because I tested negative. Wish me luck!

Zoe,

Great, if not unexpected, news. I fully expect your three month confirmatory test will also be negative.
