anyone else had/have this problem
« on: January 22, 2008, 06:43:19 pm »
I've noticed the few days at work I'm having a very hard focusing now that I know I'm +. All I want to do is read about HIV/AIDS, from living with to treatment and everything in between. I hope this'll pass...I certainly can't afford to lose my job now. Gotta keep the insurance.

hi, i think that each person processes their intial shock over the poz diagnosis in a different way. some of us, the information hounds, cover ourselves in information to try and make sense of it. I just found out in Dec 07 and I understand the shock and borderline information obsession. It will wear off and you will not think about it all day and night  8) then you will get on with living...sex is the only thing which has changed for me from before and after...hugs, Zan

I have known I was positive for about a year and started to stop thinking about it constantly after the first month. It wears off gradually. But I agree with Zan 100% sex changes even if you have someone who is supportive. It is good that you are willing to look for all the info you can get, and this forum is a great place to start.
Keep us posted on how things are going

I did exactly the same thing when I tested positive in September.  My doctor warned me to take all the infomration in bits and pieces but I dove in.  Today, I can focus at work but find that when I have too much time on my hands at home, I will dive in again and become overwhelmed.  There is a balance I'm trying to find between living normally and being informed.  I'm getting there.  Sometimes too much information too fast can be depressing and overwhelming.  Take it in bits and pieces!

Honey, just give yourself time.  When we get a new diagnosis, it's natural to want to "know" everything we can about it.  Like everyone else said, it'll wear off.  Hang in there. :-*

For me, it became an obsession at first, but with the help of internet friends and real time friends, eventually you will find your concentration levels will level out. There's never a day you don't think about it but LIFE goes on my friend! If you think you're in any danger of losing your job because of your lack of concentration, perhaps some of that vacation time you've got stored up might be a good idea if you do something constructive with it - just a suggestion. If you're unable to shake it off, perhaps a therapist (best to go to someone who deals with newly diagnosed found through a local ASO) might be able to assist in offering some suggestions that might be helpful in 'shutting off' during work. It's not easy at first, but it gets easier buddy! Promise! PLEASE know that there's loads of great people on here who are supportive and 'drop in' anytime with random thoughts or questions.

In any case, keep us posted. OK?

It's just part of our natural "fight or flight" response.  At least you're not getting stoned and acting out sexually!  Expect it to happen the first time you have a cold after testing poz; and it'll be really nuts if you get any other heavy medical news in the future.  Being informed is good, but obsessing to the point of withdrawing from society or wearing yourself down emotionalliy isn't, though.

Best,
David

You have gotten some really great responses..  When I first tested positive two years ago, I have no idea how I focused I don't even think I remember the first two weeks.  I took some time off (I work in a very demanding office) just to get my head straight..  Give yourself a chance to accept your new diagnosis, things will get better..  Take care, D

I'm glad that I didn't have the internet to contend with when I was diagnosed.  I'd think that would greatly change the experience.  It's GREAT later after the shock wears off, but there's too much BS out there to wade through for the uninitiated.  I'd highly advise trying to restrict your intake, but I'm sure it's like a crack whore saying no to a pusher.

Have to agree and a big bump to Philly... there is so much floating around on the Internet that it can be over whelming at first......many of us on this forum have been LTS  ..me= 14yrs... and others even more... the variety  and validity of the info available is very broad  including a number of hoaxers/ denialists / quacks , etc   but there are a few reliable sources...this Forum  is the best, up to date..reliable and covers just about any situation you can run into...also the best moderated...no foolishness allowed  ( not much anyway) .....great group of folks...limit your self to a specific period ,  say, one hour a day after dinner...... that will be enough to saturate you for a while....  welcome  to the group
