First Time Anal, Worried
« on: February 02, 2018, 08:05:43 pm »
Hello. I had my first experience with anal (received), now 3 days ago. I was traveling for work and connected with and old friend from college while we were at the same convention. We used to jerk off together. One thing let to another and we had sex. I’ve never had sex with another man and I’m not sure what to do now. We went and got condoms and lube (Astro Glide) and had some great sex.  He’s married and said he’s tested, clean, and hiv-.  I cam home the next day and went to my doctor, and he said theres no need for PEP.  He basically refused to give it to me saying my risk was negligible, and PEP can be taxing on liver and really only needs be used in ”high risk” situations.  I couldn’t sleep last night.  There seems to be lots of conflicting information on the web about how much risk I have.  My ass also itches today, should I be worried about this? I used hemorrhoid cream which has helped. Is this just a natural reaction to anal?

Am I at risk and what are my options now? Should I go to the emergency room to get PEP? Is it worth it?  From what I’ve read PEP is only effective in the first 48/72 hrs and I’m im about 4 hours away from 72 mark.  Thanks for any help.

His HIV status is irrelevant, he could test today all it would reflect for sure is his status some 3 months ago, also there is no cleanliness test and to say STI free is clean suggest having one is dirty. It does not make people dirty.

Your risk assessment:

The protected intercourse was not a concern, HIV does not transmit through an intact latex or polyurethane condom and if they break they shred leaving no doubt.

The anal irritation has nothing to do with HIV. Relax and move on with your life.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

More information on HIV Basics, PEP, TaSP and Transmission can be found through the links in my signature to our POZ pages, this includes information on HIV Testing

Kind regards

Jim

Thank you Jim for your response, and help putting my mind at ease. This was a very new experience for me, and went in uneducated.  It’s nice to have someone that can help educate.  I was so frustrated and worried with when my Doctor would not prescribe PEP.  I thought he was dooming me.

I in no way meant to offend or infer that those with an STI are “dirty”.  It seams to be the common nomenclature to say that you are “clean” when asking someone  about their STI status.  I understand how this furthers the negative connotation of those who may have an STI.

Thank you for your help and education.

Hey Jim.  May I bother you one more time?  The anal irritation seems to been getting better.  Do you think this irritation is just due the act of having bottomed for the first time?

Anal irritation is not HIV that much I can tell you.

The irritation could however be a large number of things inducing a reaction to the lube, or the sex itself. If you continue to have problems than see your local doctor.

Also as you are sexually active keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV.
