A Gift and A Very Happy "Judy" Christmas to y'all
« on: December 21, 2007, 02:35:05 am »
I bought myself my first X'mas gift last week and I want to share! It's also partly to renew my gay membership, so what's better than a CD of the gayest singer of this generation - Rufus Wainwright - singing all the Judy Garland's standards! Guarantee to "get happy" in any parties.

Here's a taste:

If you want the complete set just send me a PM! Happy holidays everyone! ;D

Now, that is absolutely fabulous!

I didn't think any of you young people remembered Judy.

Glad to know you do.

I love Rufus.  And I remember watching Judy on the TV when I was a little boy.  My mother loved her and I never could figure out why.  It was only when I got older than I learned to appreciate her.

It's a little late but I think I'll ask Santa for this CD.  I'll get a letter off to Amazon right away.

Merry Christmas, Shaun....and Mark..

It sounds great Shaun.  Last Christmas Santa brought me a copy of LIZA WITH A Z ..............(RE-RELEASED).  It was so much fun watching this show with a very young and agile Liza. I'm glad you have experienced the JUDY sensation.

So glad you like Rufus' music too Joel! If it wasn't for him I would still be wondering what's the fuss about Judy Garland...

Merry Christmas back at ya.

Judy does the definitive rendition of that song, but I never could stand Margaret O'Brien (who plays the little girl, Tootie).

I wonder what it is about Judy that resonates with gay men so much?

Northernguy...
I would NEVER presume to speak for all gay men on the topic of Judy Garland ....why she resonates with the gay guys.
But I will offer an opinion.
First, it seems to me there are many layers to this topic.
Her personal life.
Her music and singing.
etc
Second, I think, she tried very hard to be the best performer she could be even though she suffered a lot for being in show business.  This endeared her to her audiences.
Third, the "Suffering" in itself almost made her a martyr. She nearly died of drugs and alchohol and made a comeback ...or several.  She had the guts to go back onstage and give some of the best performances of her life. (Ex: the Carneige Hall performance that Rufus Wainright is singing on his album.)  So gay guys were all cheering her on...go Judy!
Fourth, some say it was Judy Garlands death that sparked the Stonewall riots in New York City in 1969 (correct me on dates). But it is debated.  Regardless, I do personally remember the event and the depth of grief that gay people felt.  Its entirely possible that the grief and anger that those drag queens at the StomeWall Bar felt over Judy and add to that yet another police raid on their bar.....was all it took to start the gay revolution.

I went out and bought the Rufus DVD at the Boxing Day Sales (A Canadian tradition) but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.
